The technologies for wastewater treatment are well-established; however, the goals for sustainable environmental management require more efforts in finding new robust and efficient methods with improved eco-friendly and optimized cost. Non-thermal plasma is considered a promising method in this respect due to the high degree of controllability, reduced cost and lower environmental impacts. In the current study, we investigated the application of flying jet plasma torch in the treatment of wastewater samples collected from different parts of Nizwa Sewage Treatment Plant. The objective was to contemplate the performance of novel approach that may induce higher treatment efficiency at reduced cost. Upon using plasma treatment for several durations (15 minutes to 2 hours), the results exhibited by the bacterial growth curve suggest a significantly higher reduction in biological and chemical oxygen demands as well as the de-activation of the microbial activity for several hours. The current findings show this considerable worth and indicate the feasibility of using jet plasma for wastewater treatment applications. The proposed technique was shown competitive to traditional wastewater treatment techniques in terms of process time, efficiency and operational cost.

As population increases, domestic wastewater generated will increase as well. Domestic wastewater needs to be treated properly so as not to pollute the recipient's water body. Kampung Kandang already has a communal domestic wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) to treat domestic wastewater generated by citizens. The problem from the citizens is that the WWTP needs to be rehabilitated because the amount of sludge floating in the first biological treatment tank and still has a disturbing odor. Alternative solution for this problem is by rehabilitating WWTPs so that their functions are more optimal. The purpose of this study was to evaluate domestic wastewater in Kampung Kandang. The methods used in evaluating the wastewater i.e. analysis of primary data, calculation of standard stream evaluation and calculation of removal percentage. Communal Domestic WWTP needs to remove COD, BOD, TSS, Ammonia, and Total Coliforms parameters of 97.7%, 98.9%, 42.7%, 95.6%, and 99.9%. WWTP has already removed the TSS and ammonia. BOD, COD, and total coliform should be reduced by WWTP as much for each parameter are 25, 9%, 35%, and 95, 83%. Wastewater evaluation data can be used as a basis for the design of rehabilitation to be carried out at the Communal Domestic WWTP in Kampung Kandang.

Introduction: Moringa oleifera seed is a bio-flocculant liable to purify water and verified to be one of the generally efficient prime coagulants for water treatment. M. oleifera seeds also have the potentials to eliminate a broad variety of bacteria, including Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, B. cereus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Enterobacter ludwigii, from domestic wastewater. Objective: The comparative bio-flocculating ability and antimicrobial activities of powdered Moringa oleifera seeds and alum for the treatment of domestic wastewater from a university student’ hostels were explored. Methods: Collection of wastewater samples, physicochemical analysis of wastewater samples and treatment of the wastewater samples with powdered M. oleifera seeds and alum were conducted using standard techniques. Enumeration and identification of bacteria using biochemical depiction and (16S RNA) with fungi after treatment were employed via standard protocols. Results: The optimum pH obtained using powdered M. oleifera seeds was 6.00 – 7.38 and in line with the recommended WHO standard. This study revealed that the bacterial count in wastewater samples of Jibowu and Abiola hostels after treatment with 2g of powdered M. oleifera seeds and 6g of alum was high (199.67±0.89 CFU/ml); low (26.00±0.57 CFU/ml) for powdered M. oleifera seeds and high (87.00±0.57 CFU/ml); low (6.33±0.57 CFU/ml) for alum respectively. The fungal count of the wastewater samples for Akindeko and Jibowu hostels after treatment with 2g of powdered M. oleifera seeds and 6g of alum was high (26.00±0.57 Sfu/ml); low (5.00±0.57 Sfu/ml) for powdered M. oleifera seeds and high (19.00±0.58 Sfu/ml); low (2.00±0.57 Sfu/ml) for alum respectively. Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis with NCBI-certified B. cereus mkbk1, Pseudomonas aeruginosa mkbk 2 and Enterobacter ludwigii mkbk 3 were isolated from the wastewater samples. Conclusion: The findings of this study suggest that the bio-flocculating ability of powdered M. oleifera seeds accentuated better antimicrobial efficacy of M. oleifera over alum as a proviso to the blend of powdered M. oleifera seeds and alum for the treatment of domestic wastewaters.
