Measures of cardiovascular autonomic nervous function: agreement, reproducibility, and reference values in middle age and elderly subjects

Abstract: Aims/hypothesis. Currently, three categories of cardiovascular autonomic nervous function measures are used: classic Ewing-test measures, measures of heartrate variability (HRV), and measures of baroreflex sensitivity (BRS). Little is known about the agreement between these measures, and reference and reproducibility values for these measures have not been reported within the same group. Methods. As part of the Hoorn Study, 631 subjects aged 50 to 75 participated in a study of autonomic nervous function. Cardi… Show more

“…The reliability coefficients of these parameters, however, were shown to be around 50%. 12 A reduction in myocardial uptake of 123 I-metaiodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) reflects a reduction in the concentration of norepinephrine at presynaptic sites or a reduction in the neural density, whereas an enhanced washout rate (WR) of 123 I-MIBG reflects enhanced release of norepinephrine from presynaptic sites. 13 Cardiac 123 I-MIBG scintigraphy is a sensitive method for detecting sympathetic dysfunction in many clinical disorders, including diabetes mellitus.…”

“…Five patients but no control had abnormal values (p = 0.037) when compared to age-based normative data (Fig. 2) [14,[16][17][18]. The 30:15 ratio was inversely associated with longer disease duration (r = -0.54, p = 0.014) and had a weak association with disease severity as rated by the functional staging of FARS (r = -0.42, p = 0.065).…”

“…Heart rate variability (HRV) examinations were performed between 9:00 and 11:30 a.m. to avoid diurnal variations and recorded on a continuous electrocardiogram machine [14,15]. All HRV values were compared to age-and gender-based normative values [14,[16][17][18]. For comparison between patients and controls, each abnormal autonomic test was given a score of one; therefore, the maximum total score was six, which was the Autonomic Tests Score (ATS).…”

“…Both of them were sufficiently experienced in conventional (CC) and robot-assisted laparoscopic cholecystectomy (RC) to perform the operation safely and with adequate comfort levels. In order to reduce external influences as much as possible, preoperative activities were standardized [18,19]. The procedures were performed after at least 7 h of sleep the night before.…”
