Measures of adherence to epilepsy treatment: Review of present practices and recommendations for future directions

Abstract: SUMMARYEpilepsy is one of the most common neurological disorders worldwide, and the majority of people with epilepsy who live in developed countries manage their condition with antiseizure medication. Surprisingly, therefore, the literature on epilepsy does not document a comprehensive investigation of patient adherence to medication treatment. “…In the context of clinical research, proper interpretation of proof-of-concept trials testing new pharmacologic regimens requires valid adherence data, because any null findings may stem from poor adherence rather than a lack of drug efficacy. Research designed to understand and promote medication adherence also requires precise methods of adherence assessment.Among many approaches to assessing medication adherence, patient self-report measures remain the most common method [1][2][3][4][5][6]. “…patient compliance, что означает «соблюдение больным режима и схемы лече-ния». Считается, что от 30 до 40% пациентов, страдающих эпилепсией, не во всем следуют советам врача [3][4][5][6]. Нару-шение комплаентности приводит к неблагоприятным исхо-дам эпилепсии.…”
