“…The mainstay of asthma therapy has, for decades, included inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) for maintenance as well as shortacting beta-agonist (SABA) as-needed for rapid relief of acute symptoms. However, adherence to ICS monotherapy for asthma control is low [1][2][3], which may in part be due to the minimal perceived benefit of ICS for immediate symptom relief. And while SABA provides short-term relief of symptoms, frequent and prolonged use is associated with betareceptor tolerance and limits the efficacy of these agents, an effect, which is mitigated by concomitant steroid therapy [4], suggesting a synergy between SABA and ICS for asthma control.…”
