The aim of the paper focuses on generating insights into the competitiveness of public transport in Moscow City in relation to the use of personal cars, considering individual basic consumer values and environmental factors, including the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The research question in this study is: how can we assess the main indicators of public transport’s competitiveness, which can motivate personal car owners with specific basic values to change the transportation mode for personal mobility? This conceptual research model combines the content analysis of publications and large-scale online survey of Moscow City’s car owners—potential consumers of public transport services—on a representative quota sample of 1263 respondents. The methodology includes the axiological approach for the identification of the main factors of consumer behavior of personal car owners in the city with combinations of the modified Schwartz’s methodology of the basic individual values evaluations. Secondary data manifested the changes in the behavior of car owners due to the fact that they value metropolitan environmental degradation and changed their transportation preferences to public transport even during the COVID-19 pandemic. Based on the factor and cluster analysis of the value profile of the individuals, seven clusters of car owners were identified, and two large clusters were selected as target segments for public transport services. The conclusion was made that it is necessary to differentiate social and marketing programs to promote the competitiveness of public transport in the minds of consumers.

As cidades inteligentes aperfeiçoam o seu sistema de transporte de massa através da sua oferta diversificada dos seus modos de transporte urbano para o transporte público. Existem opções de tecnologias inteligentes e sustentáveis que podem ser embarcadas e estarem disponíveis para utilização nesse sistema. A composição do sistema de transporte urbano de massa é um serviço público/privado e consorciado ofertado para uma demanda de cidadãos que visa a melhoria da mobilidade urbana. O transporte urbano de massa pode ser classificado partindo do levantamento de dados, tais como: os tipos de modos de transporte de massa existentes, as tecnologias inteligentes disponíveis e as fontes de energia aplicadas para a locomoção. Nesta pesquisa foi aplicado o método de estudo de caso múltiplo do sistema de transporte de massa, com o uso da técnica de triangulação de três bases de dados coletados em 2020. O objetivo deste estudo foi analisar e compreender a composição e a concentração dos sistemas de transporte urbano de massa de quatro cidades inteligentes com perfil metropolitano e classificar estas cidades inteligentes utilizando relatórios e painéis (dashboard) com o auxílio do software Power Business Intelligence (BI) da Microsoft como ferramenta de análise final. Considera-se que esses sistemas de transporte urbano de massa metropolitanos são construídos historicamente em estágios de evolução tecnológica e são implantados nas cidades inteligentes de acordo com as necessidades de mobilidade urbana das cidades, e podem ser classificados como mais ou menos diversos, mais ou menos tecnológicos e mais ou menos limpos ou poluentes.

Several cities worldwide are studying the replacement of their trolleybus systems with diesel buses or battery electric buses, due to their flexibility and lower operational costs. Diesel buses are considered a major cause of gas emissions in cities, while battery electric buses employ cutting-edge technology, but there is still discussion around the topic due to their technology costs, autonomy, and the sustainability of battery packs. In this study, we evaluated the trolleybus system’s potential for reducing emissions, noise pollution, and greenhouse gases (GHGs) when compared to diesel buses. Furthermore, we compared the trolleybus system with battery electric buses in terms of cost and environmental benefits. To do so, a case study was conducted in São Paulo, Brazil, the largest city in Latin America, which operates the second-highest trolleybus system on the American continent. Our results show that the trolleybus system is a feasible alternative to diesel buses when considering environmental aspects. It can be seen as a complementary service for urban transport systems in the city’s transition to clean energy. Finally, the study implications indicate the need for further investigation of the benefits of in-motion-charge technology to generate flexibility in trolleybus systems, and the involvement of stakeholders in the transition matrix energy process in urban bus systems beyond the direct costs.
