Measures for optimizing pulsed EC-QC laser spectroscopy of liquids and application to multi-analyte blood analysis

Abstract: We employed a broadly tunable pulsed external cavity (EC)-QC laser with a spectral tuning range from 1030 cm -1 to 1230 cm -1 and a tuning speed of 166 cm -1 /s for direct absorption spectroscopy of aqueous solutions. The laser offered spectral power densities of up to four orders of magnitude higher than available with a conventional FTIR spectrometer. Therefore, a portable demonstration system with a large optical path length transmission flow cell (165 µm) could be realized preventing clogging of the flow c… Show more

“…Despite this limitation, the recent successful utilisation of such instrumentation has been reported for several clinical chemistry applications. [19][20][21][22][23] By using multivariate infrared spectroscopy, the application of acetate or mannitol containing perfusates has been investigated for microdialysate measurements. The latter marker substance is suggested especially for application with single external cavity tuneable quantum cascade lasers, rendering only a limited wavenumber interval compared with FTIR-devices, but can be much smaller in device size.…”

“…High-intensity laser light sources however contribute to the overall noise level, especially when operated in pulsed mode, because of pulse-to-pulse intensity fluctuations. 24 , 25 …”

“…The IR beam path passes through the center of the hollow rods. The advantage of an adjustable path length was established previously as the maximum increase in the QCL path length is a function of the absorption coefficient . Previous work on variable path length transmission IR flow cells provided a starting point for the current design, but were further modified to meet the needs of SEC, specifically to minimize flow disturbances and too long residence distribution times .…”
