Measurements of the top quark branching ratios into channels with leptons and quarks with the ATLAS detector

Abstract: Measurements of the branching ratios of top quark decays into leptons and jets using events with tt (top antitop) pairs are reported. Events were recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. The collected data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 4.6 fb −1 . The measured top quark branching ratios agree with the Standard Model predictions within the measurement uncertainties of a few percent.

“…LFU in top decays is currently much less established experimentally. The precision of existing LHC measurements of the top decay branching fractions to final states involving a τ lepton is at the 20% level and already limited by systematic uncertainties [17,18]. Despite this relatively poor precision, we find that these searches have comparable sensitivity to new physics for mediators lighter than the top mass.…”

“…In this process the π + D must be somewhat lighter than the top quark, and thus π + D → τ + ν τ dominates for the charged pions, leading to an excess of τ 's in top decay. LHC analyses of top decay, however, are consistent with lepton universality [131,132]. For values of the pion mass slightly less than the top quark mass, the pion branching ratio to τ is similar to the SM branching ratio of the W to tau.…”
