Abstract. The unpolarised differential cross section and the two deuteron tensor analysing powers Axx and Ayy of the dp → {pp}sn charge-exchange reaction have been measured with the ANKE spectrometer at the COSY storage ring. Using deuteron beams with energies 1.2, 1.6, 1.8, and 2.27 GeV, data were obtained for small momentum transfers to a {pp}s system with low excitation energy. The results at the three lower energies are consistent with impulse approximation predictions based upon the current knowledge of the neutron-proton amplitudes. However, at 2.27 GeV, where these amplitudes are far more uncertain, agreement requires a reduction in the overall double-spin-flip contribution, with an especially significant effect in the longitudinal direction. These conclusions are supported by measurements of the deuteronproton spin-correlation parameters Cx,x and Cy,y that were carried out in the d p → {pp}sn reaction at 1.2 and 2.27 GeV. The values obtained for the proton analysing power A p y also suggest the need for a radical reevaluation of the neutron-proton elastic scattering amplitudes at the higher energy. It is therefore clear that such measurements can provide a valuable addition to the neutron-proton database in the charge-exchange region. PACS

The available data on the forward charge exchange of nucleons on the deuteron up to 2 GeV per nucleon are reviewed. The value of the inclusive nd → pnn/np → pn cross section ratio is sensitive to the fraction of spinindependent neutron-proton backward scattering. The measurements of the polarisation transfer in d( n, p ){nn} or the deuteron analysing power in p( d, {pp})n in high resolution experiments, where the final nn or pp pair emerge at low excitation energy, depend upon the longitudinal and transverse spin-spin np amplitudes. The relation between these types of experiments is discussed and the results compared with predictions of the impulse approximation model in order to see what new constraints they can bring to the neutron-proton database.

The STRELA experimental setup designed for studying charge exchange processes in deuteronproton collisions at energies above 1 GeV is described. The setup is a one arm magnetic spectrometer the main elements of which are drift chambers. The setup has been tested by irradiation in a deuteron beam with a momentum of 3.5 GeV/c at the Nuclotron accelerator complex (Laboratory of High Energy Physics, Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR)). Algorithms for track searching and reconstruction in drift chambers have been developed and tested using real events. The attained spatial resolution of the chambers is in the range of 90-120 µm, which is sufficient for studying the process we are interested in.
