Measurements of the radial structure and poloidal spectra of toroidal Alfvén eigenmodes in the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor

Abstract: Toroidal Alfvén eigenmodes (TAE) have been excited by tangential neutral beam injection in the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor (TFTR) [Proceedings of the Thirteenth International Conference on Plasma Physics and Controlled Nuclear Fusion Research, 1990, Washington, D.C. (International Atomic Energy Agency, Vienna, 1990), Vol. I, p. 9]. Beam emission spectroscopy (BES) has been used to study the radial structure and the poloidal power spectra of these modes. Radial profiles show a global, standing wave structure wi… Show more

“…In TFTR, the TAE radial eigenfunction was obtained for the first time using Beam Emission Spectroscopy (BES) and reflectometry. The poloidal mode number was found to be consistent within 50 % of the predictions from an ideal MHD model [10]. Nazikian et al investigated the radial mode structure of a n = 4 TAE using three fixed frequency X-mode reflectometer channels.…”

“…On the other hand, the experimental plasma displacement has been estimated ϳ5 -10 mm from the density fluctuation. 16 This enables us to estimate the amplitude ␦B/Bϳv/V A ϳ / A Rϳ0.6-1.3ϫ10 Ϫ3 . With this esti- FIG.…”

“…The measured frequency agrees well with the expected frequency in many devices. 32 The spatial structure is in rough qualitative agreement with theory for some modes in TFTR 33,34 but agrees rather poorly with theory in DIII-D. 35,36 There have been several notable successes of linear TAE stability theory, particularly for alpha-driven TAEs in TFTR 34 and comparisons of JET antenna measurements with calculations by the gyrokinetic PENN code. 21 The only attempt to compare theoretical predictions of fastion transport with measurements failed.…”
