Measurements of the Double-Spin Asymmetry A1 on Helium-3: Toward a Precise Measurement of the Neutron A1

Abstract: The spin structure of protons and neutrons has been an open question for nearly twenty-five years, after surprising experimental results disproved the simple model in which valence quarks were responsible for nearly 100% of the nucleon spin. Diverse theoretical approaches have been brought to bear on the problem, but a shortage of precise data -especially on neutron spin structure -has prevented a thorough understanding.Experiment E06-014, conducted in Hall A of Jefferson Laboratory in 2009, presented an oppor… Show more

“…Each laser is then gain-switch so that the pulse rate, and hence the repetition rate of the electron bunches, is 499 MHz and 120 • out of phase with the others. Through the use of various optic components, beam splitters, polarizers and dichroic mirrors, the lasers from each hall are directed along a single axis so that they will illuminate the same photocathode [75].…”

“…Another helicity correlated charge asymmetry control is through the use of an insert able half wave plate (IHWP). The IHWP is made of mica, and is placed in the photon beam line and flips the helicity sign produced by the Pockel cells for a given voltage [75,76].…”

“…During the upgrade to the Hall A polarimeter, we replaced a multi-element lead-tungstate (PbWO 4 ) calorimeter with a single crystal of Cerium-doped Gd 2 SiO 5 crystal (GSO) manufactured by Hitachi Chemical, a cylinder 15 cm long and 6 cm diameter [2] [3]. The properties of GSO make it well-suited to this application.…”

“…The theoretical asymmetry, A th , is calculated using a GEANT4 simulation [7], which is customized for the specific kinematics, apparatus, and integrating or counting measurement method chosen [8], and includes a corresponding radiative correction [9]. A detailed discussion of this simulation will be given in a future publication.…”
