Measurements of hydrogen peroxide concentrations in Tokyo and Thailand

Abstract: Gas-phase hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) is very harmful to plants when combined with ozone (O 3 ). Information on ambient H 2 O 2 concentrations, especially for long durations, is limited not only in Thailand and South East Asia but also in Japan. The objective of the present research was to accumulate data of H 2 O 2 concentrations over long durations in Tokyo and Thailand. Hydrogen peroxide concentrations were monitored at

“…Samples were analyzed using a portable RQflex 10 reflectometer (MERCK KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany). This equipment is a reliable to measure peroxides concentration (Chutteang et al, 2012). These environmental control procedures are almost identical to those of Chen et al (2005;.…”

“…Chutteang et al (2012) reported that the monthly average level of hydrogen peroxide in Tokyo, Japan and Chiang Mai, Thailand from 2009-2011 was about 2 ppbv and the maximum concentrations reach up to 6 ppbv in summer. Therefore, the trend of the atmospheric concentration of gas-phase peroxides has been gradually increasing , Chutteang et al, 2012.…”

“…The concentrations of gas-phase H 2 O 2 are found in ranges of 0.02 to 6 ppbv in Japan. (Sakugawa et al, 1990;Takami et al, 2003;Chutteang et al, 2012). The peroxide concentrations were in the order of several ppbv in Nagano Prefecture, Japan (Chen et al, 2008).…”

“…In fact, combined O 3 and peroxides are much more harmful to some vegetables and other plants than single O 3 (Chen et al, 2005;Chen et al, 2010). Recent investigations showed that peroxides concentrations have been increasing (Chen et al, 2008;Chutteang et al, 2012). Terry et al (1995) suggested that peroxides can damage DNA, lipids, proteins, and plasma membrane that may impact productivity by a reduced photosynthetic rate, inhibited translocation and declined biomass.…”
