Coarse particulate organic matter (CPOM, i.e. particles such as leaves, wood fragments, twigs, branches, flowers, seeds and fruits) in aquatic systems influences the flow, provides an important food source, and at the catchment scale, may significantly contribute to total carbon export. CPOM exports have rarely been quantified in subtropical, broadleaf forest streams. We captured CPOM in Bunte traps in the rainfall-dominated Vuelta de Zorra stream in southern Chile to (a) propose a novel classification to characterize the different CPOM components, (b) analyze the frequency of each matter class (i.e. leaves, wood fragments, and 'others') and its seasonal variability, (c) quantify the CPOM transported, (d) derive a model to quantify CPOM transport rates, and (e) compare the transported CPOM data with those from a unique long-term (> sevenyears) large wood monitoring dataset. Results showed that leaves were significantly more abundant than other types of CPOM in all seasons. The dry CPOM transport rate ranged over three orders of magnitude, and there was a significant relationship with mean discharge. Mean dry CPOM yield for the study period 2015-2017 was 4.6kg/ha/yr when normalizing to the total forested catchment area. The 2009-2018 decadal average yield was 6.8kg/ha/yr when normalizing to the total forested catchment area. These values are similar to measurements from deciduous and coniferous forests in streams in the United States and the Brazilian Mato Grosso and~1/10 of the yields obtained in a Swiss torrent. Over a three-year period, the CPOM exports in Vuelta de Zorra ranged between 13 and 36% of the exported large wood (particles with diameters ≥ 100mm and length ≥ 1m) exports. Our data collected from an underrepresented area improve the understanding of global carbon budgets and cycling.

The exports of carbon and nitrogen with water flowing in the headwater streams could be important components of material mitigation in forest ecosystems. Plant debris is a major source of dissolved organic matter for headwater streams, but few studies have investigated the differences between the impacts of woody debris and non-woody debris inputs on headwater streams in terms of carbon and nitrogen exports. Here, we assessed the effects of plant debris (i.e., woody debris, non-woody debris and mixed debris) on the concentrations and exports of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and total dissolved nitrogen (TDN) in the headwater streams of an alpine forest on the eastern Tibetan Plateau. Woody and non-woody debris only weakly affected the DOC and TDN concentrations in the headwater streams.Compared with those in the reference stream excluding plant debris, woody debris increased the exports of DOC and TDN by 19% and 13%, whereas non-woody debris decreased the exports of DOC and TDN by 22% and 25%, respectively. However, when fall approached, the role of non-woody debris reversed to enhance the streamwater exports of DOC and TDN. The effect of non-woody debris during the fall season differed from that during the overall growing season, indicating that restricting non-woody debris inputs might improve the ability of the stream to retain forest carbon and nitrogen. Notwithstanding the relatively limited experimental period, this work revealed the critical importance of plant debris for carbon and nutrients within water conservation regions like alpine forests.

Large wood drives both the form and function of gravel‐bed rivers draining forested basins. Previously overlooked benefits of wood in rivers are now widely recognized. Together with flow and sediment regimes, the wood regime controls rivers' physical and ecological integrity. Yet large quantities of wood transported during floods can pose additional hazards, potentially damaging infrastructures like bridges or dams and exacerbating flooding. However, unlike the water and sediment regimes intensively studied over the past decades, the instream wood regime or budgeting has been only recently defined and thus is still rarely quantified. The instream wood budget describes the cascading processes from supply or recruitment, entrainment, and transport to deposition, storage and decay (i.e., fragmentation or decomposition). These processes show high spatial and temporal variability but can be characterized by magnitude, frequency, timing, duration and mode. Instream wood budgeting is challenging, primarily because of the lack of observations, monitoring stations, and standardized protocols to acquire data. This contribution reviews the most recent advances to quantify the different instream wood budget components, notably the wood supply, and transfer. Case studies showing applications of biogeochemistry, videography, artificial intelligence, numerical modelling or tracking illustrate the current progress. Because critical challenges remain, we identify and describe some of them and discuss how the wood in riverine sciences may develop in the future.
