Measurements of chromatic sensitivity in the mesopic range

Abstract: We measured chromatic threshold sensitivity in the mesopic range using a combination of techniques that mask the detection of photopic and scotopic luminance contrast signals. The measurements were carried out at a number of light levels in the range 45-0.004 cd/m 2 , both foveally and with the stimulus centered 3.5°in the periphery. In order to investigate the effect of rod signals on chromatic detection thresholds in the near periphery of the visual field, we measured chromatic threshold ellipses when fully … Show more

“…For thresholds less than about some five SN CAD units, the departure from linearity for both increments and decrements in S-cone contrast is small, but increments in S-cone contrast increase more rapidly than decrements at larger CD values. This observation suggests that under mesopic light adaptation when YB chromatic sensitivity is poor and large CDs are needed, thresholds in the blue direction should be smaller than the corresponding thresholds towards the yellow region of the spectrum locus and this has been confirmed experimentally (22).…”

“…Color vision thresholds are also affected at lower light levels in normal subjects and particularly the detection of YB color differences [19,42]. Knoblauch and his colleagues also showed that performance on the FM100 test worsens with increasing age, but the differences reduced at higher light levels [43].…”

“…Further reductions in light level lead to a selective loss in S-cone sensitivity~Brown, 1951; Verriest et al, 1963;Walkey et al, 2001! With daylight illumination, cones dominate vision; the rod system is in saturation for all but the longest wavelengths, and their contribution is minimal~r ods in saturation are not capable of signaling stimulus change!.…”
