Quantum computation and quantum information science have transmuted from classroom conjectures and demonstrations usually confined to the laboratory into exciting sub-disciplines with potential for profound impacts in information and communication security, device miniaturization, cosmology, Internet, and so on. Recent developments in both areas have further changed the landscape of future computing and information processing technologies. Encouraged by this, both fields have witnessed interests from professional bodies, notably, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) via the IEEE P7130 working group on standards for quantum computation as well as similar interests from big technology companies (Google, Microsoft, IBM, etc.) as well as those from national and regional (China, European Union, United Kingdom, Australia, Japan, and so on) governments. With all these activities, presently, interest in and funding for quantum computation and quantum information science are at their highest points ever, thus heralding the inevitable feat of physical realization of quantum computing hardware. Considering the ubiquity and indispensability of imaging and video technologies in our lives today, it is paramount that the utility of any future computing paradigm be measured in terms of its ability to advance and guarantee perpetuity in terms of the efficacy of such technologies. Quantum image processing (QIP), a sub-discipline mainly focused on using quantum computing hardware for the attainment of the aforementioned objectives, has emerged as one of the most promising fields in the quantum computing and quantum information science domains. Its extension to realize quantum movies (or videos), which is the main subject of this disquisition, is an even newer prospect. Consequently, the main objectives of this review are twofold. First, targeting enthusiasts and beginners in the quantum computing field, the treatise provides both an essential background on the rudiments of QIP as well as an exhaustive overview of all literature related to quantum movies and/or videos. Second, for the benefit of those already pursuing research in the QIP sub-discipline, the commentary provides useful insights, allegories, and conjectures to support the integration of other media, such as quantum audio and so on, for the realization of colored talking quantum movies (or video). On the whole, the review is intended to serve as an avenue to invigorate activities tailored toward accelerating the realization of QIP-based quantum technologies.

Quantum Structure for Modelling Emotion Space of Robots

Utilising the properties of quantum mechanics, i.e., entanglement, parallelism, etc., a quantum structure is proposed for representing and manipulating emotion space of robots. This quantum emotion space (QES) provides a mechanism to extend emotion interpretation to the quantum computing domain whereby fewer resources are required and, by using unitary transformations, it facilitates easier tracking of emotion transitions over different intervals in the emotion space. The QES is designed as an intuitive and graphical visualisation of the emotion state as a curve in a cuboid, so that an “emotion sensor” could be used to track the emotion transition as well as its manipulation. This ability to use transition matrices to convey manipulation of emotions suggests the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed approach. Our study is primarily influenced by two developments. First, the massive amounts of data, complexity of control, planning and reasoning required for today’s sophisticated automation processes necessitates the need to equip robots with powerful sensors to enable them adapt and operate in all kinds of environments. Second, the renewed impetus and inevitable transition to the quantum computing paradigm suggests that quantum robots will have a role to play in future data processing and human-robot interaction either as standalone units or as part of larger hybrid systems. The QES proposed in this study provides a quantum mechanical formulation for quantum emotion as well as a platform to process, track, and manipulate instantaneous transitions in a robot’s emotion. The new perspective will open broad areas, such as applications in emotion recognition and emotional intelligence for quantum robots.

Quantum Fourier transform (QFT) plays a key role in many quantum algorithms, but the existing circuits of QFT are incomplete and lacking the proof of correctness. Furthermore, it is difficult to apply QFT to the concrete field of information processing. Thus, we firstly investigate quantum vision representation (QVR) and develop a model of QVR (MQVR). Then, we design four complete circuits of QFT and inverse QFT (IQFT) and describe the functions of their components. Meanwhile, we prove the correctness of the four complete circuits using formula derivation. Next, 2D QFT and 3D QFT based on QVR are proposed for the first time. Experimental results with simulation show the proposed QFTs are valid and useful in processing quantum images and videos. In conclusion, this paper develops a complete framework of QFT based on QVR and provides a feasible scheme for QFT to be applied in quantum vision information processing.
