Measurement of Urinary S100B Protein Concentrations for the Early Identification of Brain Damage in Asphyxiated Full-term Infants

Abstract: Longitudinal S100B protein measurements in urine soon after birth are a useful tool to identify which asphyxiated infants are at risk of long-term neurologic sequelae.

“…Urinary protein S100B concentrations did not reach the levels previously recorded by Gazzolo [48] (highest of 0.09 µg/L compared with average, on first micturition, of 1.92 ± 0.33µg/L). In fact they were considerably lower than previous studies almost to the point of being undetectable.…”

“…An alternative fluid needed to be established. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) was too high risk with the possibility of infection being potentially disastrous, so urine was used and found to be a sensitive tool for measuring this marker, identifying neonates with brain injury from peri-natal asphyxia and correlating the concentrations measured with neurological outcome up to one year following birth [48]. Thus urinary S100B…”

“…S100B, 24 NSE, 25 IL-6, urinary uric acid, cardiac troponin-I, creatinine kinase, 26 Glial Fibrillary Acidic Protein (GFAP), 27 Cytochrome C, Caspase 9 have been studied as indicators of diagnostic and prognostic indicators in Hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy. In this study we evaluated the role of cytochrome c and caspase 9 in perinatal asphyxia.…”
