Measurement of thermal property of polystyrene using dual quartz crystal resonators

Abstract: A new device using dual quartz crystal resonators is proposed to determine the thermal property and morphological change of polystyrene. The resonators are installed in a small aluminum cell directly heated and air cooled according to the programmed temperature variation. The resonant frequencies of the dual resonators-one for reference and the other for sample-are measured and analyzed for the morphological change while their temperature varies. The temperatures of the changes are compared with the DSC thermo… Show more

“…Differential scanning calorimeter and KD2 pro (thermal properties analyser produced by Decagon devices) are the equipments that are mostly used in the studies of thermal properties of material but due to their high cost, they are not always available. In view of this, [ 5 ] had proposed a new device to measure the thermal property of polystyrene and compared his results with that produced by the differential scanning calorimeter. The equipment according to the author is easy to construct.…”

“…The variation of mass loading was employed to detect the dew point of organic vapor condensing on an electrode surface [ 15 ]. The variation of micro-rheology was also used to determine the kinetic rate of photopolymerization [ 16 , 17 ] and the variation of the thermal properties of polymers [ 18 ].…”

“…From the variation of micro-rheology the kinetic rate of photopolymerization was measured to analyze polymerization kinetics [ 13 , 14 ]. The thermal properties of polymers were also measured from the change of visco-elasticity of the QCM [ 15 , 16 ].…”
