Measurement of the X-ray Spectrum of a Free Electron Laser with a Wide-Range High-Resolution Single-Shot Spectrometer

Abstract: Abstract:We developed a single-shot X-ray spectrometer for wide-range high-resolution measurements of Self-Amplified Spontaneous Emission (SASE) X-ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL) pulses. The spectrometer consists of a multi-layer elliptical mirror for producing a large divergence of 22 mrad around 9070 eV and a silicon (553) analyzer crystal. We achieved a wide energy range of 55 eV with a fine spectral resolution of 80 meV, which enabled the observation of a whole SASE-XFEL spectrum with fully-resolved spike s… Show more

“…The experiment was conducted at SACLA BL3 under the following conditions: photon energy of 9.1 keV, pulse energy of approximately 11 mJ at focus, and an estimated pulse duration of 7 fs (Inubushi et al, 2012(Inubushi et al, 2017. Based on previous studies (Kim et al, 2015), the power density of the XFEL beams on our mirrors was much lower than the damage threshold.…”

“…The experiment was performed on BL3 at SACLA at 10 keV, for which the pulse duration has been estimated to be $8 fs full width at half-maximum (FWHM) from spectra measured with a wide-range high-resolution spectrometer (Inubushi et al, 2017). The pulse energy of each delay branch was 0.18 mJ on average for an incident pulse energy of 7 mJ after the Si(111) double-crystal monochromator.…”

“…At BL3, XFEL pulses are normally generated by a self-amplified spontaneous emission (SASE) scheme [18,19]. The photon energy ranges from 4 to 20 keV with a pulse duration of around 8 fs in full width at half maximum (FWHM) in horizontal polarization [12,13]. The bandwidth (∆E/E) can be selected from two operation modes: a pink and monochromatic beam.…”

“…In contrast, single-shot measurement is applicable with an XFEL sources owing to plenty photon numbers included in a single XFEL pulse. Moreover, the short pulse duration enables to obtain a snapshot with the time resolution better than 10 fs [12,13]. Therefore, instantaneous ultrahigh-pressure states generated with high-power laser irradiation can be investigated with XFEL.…”
