Measurement of the Tensor Structure Functionb1of the Deuteron

Abstract: The Hermes experiment has investigated the tensor spin structure of the deuteron using the 27.6 GeV/c positron beam of DESY HERA. The use of a tensor-polarized deuteron gas target with only a negligible residual vector polarization enabled the first measurement of the tensor asymmetry A(d)zz and the tensor structure function b(d)1 for average values of the Bjorken variable 0.01< <0.45 and of the negative of the squared four-momentum transfer 0.5 GeV2 < <5 GeV2. The quantities A(d)zz and b(d)1 are foun… Show more

“…It indicates that high-momentum components of the deuteron wave functions play an important role in the standard convolution description for b 1 . TABLE I. Theory-2 calculations of the four tensor-polarized structure functions for kinematics of the HERMES b 1 data [20]. Furthermore, the overall sign of the SD term is opposite to the previous estimate in Ref.…”

“…The available data on the deuteron tensor spin structure function [37] provide just the required singlet combination for quarks and indicate that the second moment is more compatible with zero than the first one. This means that collective gluons in the deuteron are suppressed in comparison to the collective sea, and the ExEP explains this fact.…”

“…The Hermes collaboration [11] made an initial measurement of the b 1 tensor structure function, with intriguing results but limited precision. This motivated Jefferson Lab experiment E12-13-011 [12] which received an A − physics rating and c 1 approval 1 for 30 days to measure the deuteron tensor structure function b 1 via deep inelastic scattering from a tensor polarized target.…”
