Measurement of the semileptonic branching ratio of charm hadrons produced in

Abstract: The inclusive charm hadron semileptonic branching fractions B(c → e) and B(c → µ) in Z 0 → cc events have been determined using 4.4 million hadronic Z 0 decays collected with the OPAL detector at LEP. A charm-enriched sample is obtained by selecting events with reconstructed D * ± mesons. Using leptons found in the hemisphere opposite that of the D * ± mesons, the semileptonic branching fractions of charm hadrons are measured to be is obtained.

Precision electroweak measurements on the Z resonance

We report on the final electroweak measurements performed with data taken at the Z resonance by the experiments operating at the electron–positron colliders SLC and LEP. The data consist of 17 million Z decays accumulated by the ALEPH, DELPHI, L3 and OPAL experiments at LEP, and 600 thousand Z decays by the SLD experiment using a polarised beam at SLC. The measurements include cross-sections, forward–backward asymmetries and polarised asymmetries. The mass and width of the Z boson, mZmZ and ΓZΓZ, and its couplings to fermions, for example the ρρ parameter and the effective electroweak mixing angle for leptons, are precisely measured: mZ = 91.1875 ± 0.0021 GeV, Γ Z = 2.4952 ± 0.0023 GeV, ρℓ= 1.0050 ± 0.0010, sin2 θ (sup)lept (sub>eff = 0.23153 ± 0.00016. The number of light neutrino species is determined to be 2.9840 ± 0.0082, in agreement with the three observed generations of fundamental fermions. The results are compared to the predictions of the Standard Model (SM). At the Z-pole, electroweak radiative corrections beyond the running of the QED and QCD coupling constants are observed with a significance of five standard deviations, and in agreement with the Standard Model. Of the many Z-pole measurements, the forward–backward asymmetry in b-quark production shows the largest difference with respect to its SM expectation, at the level of 2.8 standard deviations. Through radiative corrections evaluated in the framework of the Standard Model, the Z-pole data are also used to predict the mass of the top quark, mt = 173+13 −10 GeV, and the mass of theW boson, mW = 80.363 ± 0.032 GeV. These indirect constraints are compared to the direct measurements, providing a stringent test of the SM. Using in addition the direct measurements of mt and and mWmW, the mass of the as yet unobserved SM Higgs boson is predicted with a relative uncertainty of about 50% and found to be less than 285GeV at 95% confidence level

The purely leptonic decays D ± → e ± ν and D ± s → e ± ν, for which no experimental limits exist, are highly suppressed in the Standard Model. Mere observation of these decays at the B factories BELLE/BaBar or forthcoming CLEO-c would be a clear signal of physics beyond the SM. We show that R parity violating slepton contributions can give rise to spectacular enhancements of the decay rates, resulting in branching ratios as large as 5 × 10 −3 , which strongly motivates a search in these channels.

Associated production of prompt photons and heavy quarks in off-shell gluon–gluon fusion

In the framework of the k T -factorization approach, we study the production of prompt photons associated with heavy (charm and beauty) quarks in hadron-hadron collisions at high energies. Our consideration is based on the amplitude for the production of a single photon associated with a quark pair in the fusion of two off-shell gluons. The total and differential cross sections are presented and the conservative error analysis is performed. Two sets of unintegrated gluon distributions in the proton have been used in numerical calculation: the one obtained from Ciafaloni-Catani-Fiorani-Marchesini evolution equation and the other from Kimber-Martin-Ryskin prescription. The theoretical results are compared with recent experimental data taken by the CDF collaboration at the Fermilab Tevatron. Our analysis extends to specific angular correlations between the produced prompt photons and muons originating from semileptonic decays of the final charmed or beauty quarks. We point out the importance of such observables, which can serve as a crucial test for the unintegrated gluon densities in a proton. Finally, we extrapolate the theoretical predictions to the CERN LHC energies. This paper is dedicated to the memory of P.F. Ermolov, who died on May 14, 2008.
