We study the large order behaviour in perturbation theory of the Bjorken, Ellis-Jaffe and Gross-Llewellyn-Smith sum rules. In particular, we consider their first infrared renormalons, for which we obtain their analytic structure with logarithmic accuracy and also an approximate determination of their normalization constant. Estimates of higher order terms of the perturbative series are given. The Renormalon subtracted scheme is worked out for these observables and compared with experimental data. Overall, good agreement with experiment is found. This allows us to obtainâ 0 and some higher-twist non-perturbative constants from experiment:â 0 = 0.141 ± 0.089; f 3,RS (1 GeV) = −0.124 +0.137 −0.142 GeV 2 .

Panorama 41Mitte der 80er Jahre entdeckte die Europäische Myon Kollaboration (EMC), dass der Spin des Protons sich nicht einfach aus der Summe der Spins der Quarks ergibt. Diese Entdeckung führte damals zur so genannten "Spinkrise". Um Licht in das Spinrätsel zu bringen, wurde vor mehr als zehn Jahren das HERMES-Experiment an der HERA-Speicherringanlage des Deutschen Elektronensynchrotrons (DESY) in Hamburg vorgeschlagen. Heute, nach fünf Jahren Messzeit, liegt eine Fülle von experimentellen Daten vor, die nicht nur Informationen über den Beitrag der einzelnen Quarktypen und der Gluonen zum Spin des Nukleons liefern, sondern auch wichtige neue Erkenntnisse zur starken Wechselwirkung und dem Verhalten von Quarks und Gluonen in Atomkernen. So stießen die HERMES-Physiker vor einigen Monaten auf einen neuen Kerneffekt, der inzwischen als HERMES-Effekt bezeichnet wird und der ein erneutes Rätseln um den Aufbau der Materie aus Quarks und Gluonen ausgelöst hat.
