Measurement of the NeutronF2Structure Function via Spectator Tagging with CLAS

Abstract: We report on the first measurement of the F(2) structure function of the neutron from the semi-inclusive scattering of electrons from deuterium, with low-momentum protons detected in the backward hemisphere. Restricting the momentum of the spectator protons to ≲100 MeV/c and their angles to ≳100° relative to the momentum transfer allows an interpretation of the process in terms of scattering from nearly on-shell neutrons. The F(2)(n) data collected cover the nucleon-resonance and deep-inelastic regions over a … Show more

“…There is an on-going effort to produce a physics proposal to SoLID experiment to measure PVDIS asymmetries on high Z nuclei (such as 48 Ca). By measuring PVDIS asymmetry on a proton target a set of d/u ratio measurement as a function of x bjk can be extracted independent of any nuclear medium corrections which will provide complementary data to proposed 3 H and 3 He form factor ratio measurements proposed at JLab [8,9]. When transitioning from simple quark parton model (QPM) to QCD based PVDIS asymmetries, the higher order terms in operator product expansion (OPE) must be included that will introduce higher twist (HT) effects to the PVDIS asymmetries [10].…”

“…Moreover, the upcoming tagged DIS (TDIS) experiment at Jefferson Lab [9] plans to take data on the production of leading protons from an effective neutron target in the reaction en → ep X, which, in analogy with the HERA leading neutron leptoproduction, can be described through the exchange of a π − . In the proposed experiment, the effective neutron target will be prepared by tagging spectator protons with momenta between 60 and 400 MeV at backward kinematics in the DIS of the electron from a deuteron nucleus, using the same technique that was developed for the measurement of the neutron structure function in the BONuS experiment at Jefferson Lab [10].…”

“…The tagged spectator deuteron process has been measured in two pioneering experiments at Jefferson Lab (JLab). The Deeps experiment [1] measured at proton momenta 300 − 600 MeV, while the BONuS experiment [2,3] measured down to momenta of 70 MeV. Model calculations including the effect of final-state interactions (FSI) are available [4,5].…”
