Measurement of theββDecay Half-Life ofTe130with the NEMO-3 Detector

Abstract: We report results from the NEMO-3 experiment based on an exposure of 1275 days with 661 g of 130 Te in the form of enriched and natural tellurium foils. The double beta decay rate of 130 Te is found to be greater than zero with a significance of 7.7 standard deviations and the half-life is measured to be T 2ν 1/2 = (7.0 ± 0.9(stat) ± 1.1(syst)) × 10 20 yr. This represents the most precise measurement of this half-life yet published and the first real-time observation of this decay.

“…As expected from the materials screening campaign, we find in the data that the primary backgrounds to 2νββ in EXO-200 are gamma and beta interactions due to trace quantities of 40 K, 232 Th, and 238 U in the detector materials. We separate these backgrounds from 2νββ candidates by taking advantage of the detector's good energy and position resolution and its ability to perform pattern recognition.…”

“…In all cases the experiment has made the most precise measurement of the 2νββ half-life [2,[30][31][32]. The 48 Ca source in NEMO-3 consists of nine disks of CaF 2 powder contained in thin (≈10 μm) Teflon and polyethylene envelopes.…”

“…For all seven isotopes, a search for two-neutrino decay, neutrinoless decay and decays with the Majoron emission has been performed. As a result, half-life values of 2νββ decay have been measured for all seven isotopes [61,60,70,62,66,67,127]. In addition 2νββ decay of 100 Mo to the 0 + 1 excited state of 100 Ru has been detected too [128].…”

“…Limits on neutrinoless double beta decay and on decays with the Majoron emission for all seven isotopes have also been established [61,60,70,62,66,67,69,127]. In particular, for 100 Mo, the limit T 1/2 (0ν) > 1.1 × 10 24 yr ( m ν < 0.33 − 0.62 eV) has been achieved [62].…”
