Measurement of the 2νββ decay half-life and search for the 0νββ decay of Cd

Abstract: Measurement of the 2νββ decay half-life and search for the 0νββ decay of ^{116}Cd with the NEMO-3 detector 19 y. No events have been observed above the expected background while searching for 0νββ decay. The corresponding limit on the half-life is determined to be T 0ν 1/2 ≥ 1.0 × 10 23 y at the 90% C.L. which corresponds to an upper limit on the effective Majorana neutrino mass of mν ≤ 1.4 − 2.5 eV depending on the nuclear matrix elements considered. Limits on other mechanisms generating 0νββ decay such as th… Show more

“…In our case, we assume the existence of three of such fermions, generating Dirac scotogenic masses for the two left-handed neutrinos (ν 3 = ν L3 + ν R3 is massless due to the charge assignment). In order to estimate the possible values for the parameters involved in the neutrino masses we consider the case where λ 2 , λ 4 , λ 7 1 and m 2 χ ≡ m 2 η ± = µ 2 σ 1 2 λ 8 vv S , which leads to a ≈ b c. Taking into account that for the mentioned case m 2…”

“…The interpretation of neutrino experimental data in terms of neutrino oscillations is compatible with both Majorana and Dirac neutrino masses [1]. The former possibility has received the most attention but, given the lack of signals in neutrinoless double beta decay experiments [2][3][4][5][6][7], the latter cannot be dismissed. If neutrinos are Dirac particles, the Standard Model (SM) particle content must be extended with right-handed neutrinos, which can increase the effective number of light neutrinos, N eff , until 6.…”

“…where the bound BR(µ → eγ) < 5.7 × 10 −13 [98] has been used. Regarding WIMP DM, this model features either singlet fermion or singlet/doublet scalar candidates 8 . Such a WIMP-like setup is similar to the model studied in Ref.…”

“…Moreover we need information on the elusive Majorana phases that would show up in the description of lepton number violating processes such as neutrinoless double-beta decay [5,6], whose discovery would establish the self-conjugate nature of neutrinos. Improving the current experimental sensitivities [7][8][9][10][11][12] is, again, necessary for the next step.…”
