Measurement of the branching ratio for β -delayed α decay of 16 N

Abstract: While the 12 C(α, γ) 16 O reaction plays a central role in nuclear astrophysics, the cross section at energies relevant to hydrostatic helium burning is too small to be directly measured in the laboratory. The β-delayed α spectrum of 16 N can be used to constrain the extrapolation of the E1 component of the S-factor; however, with this approach the resulting S-factor becomes strongly correlated with the assumed βα branching ratio. We have remeasured the βα branching ratio by implanting 16 N ions in a segmented… Show more

“…Our value for b βα is significantly larger than the literature value of (1.20 ± 0.05) × 10 −5 [19,28], but consistent with the less precise values of (1.3 ± 0.3) × 10 −5 obtained by Ref. [29] and (1.49 ± 0.05(stat) +0.0 −0.10 (sys)) × 10 −5 obtained by us in a previous study using a different experimental technique [30].…”

“…The experimental technique involves implanting 11 Be ions in a finely segmented Si-detector and counting the implantations and decays. This method has successfully been used in several other cases to measure β-delayed particles, even very weak branches, from 6 He [14,15], 11 Li [16], 12 B and 12 N [17], 8 B [18] and 16 N [19]. The β transition and the populated daughter states in 11 B are characterised by fitting an R-matrix expression to the observed spectrum and deriving values for the reduced Gamow-Teller (GT) matrix elements, as well as level energies and partial widths.…”

“…Another study has been recently performed at KVI where the goal was to determine the total βα branching ratio (Refsgaard et al, 2016) . A review of each of these analyses has been reserved for later in this work, Sec.…”
