Measurement of the beam asymmetry Σ for π0 and η photoproduction on the proton at Eγ

Abstract: We report measurements of the photon beam asymmetry Σ for the reactions γp → pπ 0 and γp → pη from the GLUEX experiment using a 9 GeV linearly-polarized, tagged photon beam incident on a liquid hydrogen target in Jefferson Lab's Hall D. The asymmetries, measured as a function of the proton momentum transfer, possess greater precision than previous π 0 measurements and are the first η measurements in this energy regime. The results are compared with theoretical predictions based on t-channel, quasi-particle exc… Show more

“…The observable Σ is close to unity and only mildly t-dependent. In tendency this is in agreement with a glueX measurement for π 0 photoproduction at small −t [40].…”

“…This is not restrictive as the target is not polarized in GlueX, and the measured intensities are not sensitive to the details of the nucleon helicity structure. Finally, we consider only the amplitudes with = + based on the observation that natural parity exchanges are dominant in the energy range of interest [9,13]. The model is fully determined by the knowledge of the 2 + 1 projections of each spin wave.…”

“…Our goal is to investigate sensitivity of these observables to the presence of an exotic meson and to guide future experimental analysis by identifying which combinations of moments are most relevant for the identification of this resonance. In order to illustrate the sensitivity of the moments to exotic contributions, we discuss production of resonant S-, P -, D-waves in the forward direction which are produced dominantly by natural exchanges in the t channel [8,9].…”
