Measurement of Soil Moisture Content at Microwave Frequencies

Abstract: This paper discusses the measurement of moisture content present in soil by computing the dielectric constant of soil samples at three frequencies, using microwave free-space transmission technique. This leads to the determination of inherent moisture content in the samples by applying Topp's Equation. The change in the value of dielectric constant and the subsequent increase in the moisture content for each of the soil samples with added moisture levels at 20%, 23.1% and 28.6% are noted. Dielectric constant o… Show more

“…Research studies on grain crops have been widely conducted on various aspects such as crops yield prediction [ 7 ], grain quality [ 8 ], soil moisture [ 9 , 10 ], and moisture content detection [ 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 , 15 ]. Numerous research studies have been conducted to find a reliable method to measure the moisture content in seasonal grain crops such as paddy, peanuts, and corn [ 16 , 17 , 18 ].…”

“…Some researches attempted to determine the effects of ambient conditions, which are created for the preservation of foods and preservation of freshness for a long time in food industry, on the material by the change in the permittivity [14,15]. Successful studies have been conducted to examine the effect of changes in humidity on the freshness of the food [16,17].…”

“…The relative dielectric permittivity ( r ) can be converted to the soil moisture according the the empirical relationship derived from the experiment measurements (Behari 2005;Mohan et al 2015). Note that, the relationship between r and moisture is not identical, and may involve some uncertainties.…”
