The recently developed Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) -jet model is used as an effective chiral quark theory to calculate the quark fragmentation functions to pions, kaons, nucleons, and antinucleons. The effects of the vector mesons ρ, K * , and φ on the production of secondary pions and kaons are included. The fragmentation processes to nucleons and antinucleons are described by using the quark-diquark picture, which has been shown to give a reasonable description of quark distribution functions. We incorporate effects of next-to-leading order in the Q 2 evolution, and compare our results with the empirical fragmentation functions.

According to QCD the quark structure of the nucleon spin within the twist-2 approximation is parameterized by eight transverse-momentum-dependent (TMD) parton distribution functions (PDFs). The PDFs describe the distributions of longitudinal and transverse momenta of partons and their correlations with nucleon and quark polarizations and can be accessed through measurement of spin (in)dependent azimuthal asymmetries in semi-inclusive DIS (SIDIS) and Drell-Yan processes. The COMPASS experiment at CERN, as part of its programme, addresses the exploration of the spin structure of the nucleon by measuring spin (in)dependent azimuthal asymmetries in semi-inclusive DIS and, recently, also in Drell-Yan processes. Between 2002 and 2011 COMPASS performed a series of SIDIS measurements, using a longitudinally polarized muon beam impinging on longitudinally and transversely polarized 6 LiD or NH 3 targets. Drell-Yan measurements with a π − beam interacting with a transversely polarized NH 3 target started with the 2015 run and will be continued in 2018. The measurement of the Sivers and other azimuthal asymmetries at practically the same hard scale in polarized SIDIS and Drell-Yan provides a unique possibility to test predicted in QCD (pseudo-)universal features of transversemomentum-dependent parton distribution functions. The main focus of this review is set on the first ever polarized Drell-Yan measurements performed by COMPASS and on the recent results obtained for target longitudinal and transverse spin dependent SIDIS asymmetries.

Common Somatic Alterations Identified in Maffucci Syndrome by Molecular Karyotyping

Maffucci syndrome (MS) is a rare congenital disorder characterized by multiple central cartilaginous tumors (enchondromas) in association with cutaneous spindle cell hemangiomas. These patients have a high incidence of malignant transformation. No familial case is known and the etiopathogenic cause remains unknown. In enchondromatosis (Ollier disease, OD), which is comprised of enchondromas only, 4 mutations in the PTHR1 gene have been identified in 4 patients; 3 were somatic and 1 was germline. No PTHR1 mutations have been detected in MS, whereas somatic IDH1 and, more rarely, IDH2 mutations have been observed in 77% of patients with MS and 81% of patients with OD. These genetic alterations are shared with other tumors, including glioma, leukemia and carcinoma. To search for underlying somatic genomic causes, we screened MS tissues using Affymetrix SNP-chips. We looked for CNVs, LOH and uniparental isodisomy (UPID) by performing pairwise analyses between allelic intensities in tumoral DNA versus the corresponding blood-extracted DNA. While common chromosomal anomalies were absent in constitutional DNA, several shared CNVs were identified in MS-associated tumors. The most frequently encountered somatic alterations were localized in 2p22.3, 2q24.3 and 14q11.2, implicating these chromosomal rearrangements in the formation of enchondromas and spindle cell hemangiomas in MS. In one chondrosarcoma specimen, large amplifications and/or deletions were observed in chromosomes 3, 6, 9, 10, 12, 13, and 19. Some of these genetic changes have been reported in other chondrosarcomas suggesting an etiopathogenic role. No LOH/UPID was observed in any Maffucci tissue. Our findings identify frequent somatic chromosomal rearrangements on 2p22.3, 2q24.3 and 14q11.2, which may unmask mutations leading to the lesions pathognomonic of MS.
