Measurement of SIMS Instrumental Mass Fractionation of Pb Isotopes During Zircon Dating

Abstract: An igneous zircon reference material (OG1) was characterised for U‐Pb isotopes by ID‐TIMS, and utilised to evaluate SIMS (SHRIMP) instrumental mass fractionation (IMF) of radiogenic Pb isotopes (207Pb*/206Pb*). The TIMS 207Pb*/206Pb* reference value for OG1 was 0.29907 ± 0.00011 (95% confidence limit), 3465.4 ± 0.6 Ma. The high 207Pb* (∼ 30 μg g−1), negligible common Pb, and isotopic homogeneity permitted precise (± 1–2‰) 207Pb*/206Pb* measurements within the analytical sessions. “…For SHRIMP U-Pb analyses, the individual spot uncertainties for calibrated 206 Pb/ 238 U values are typically about ±2% at 95% confidence (Stern & Amelin 2003, Black et al 2004, Fletcher et al 2010, Stern et al 2009). Our data consistently achieve this level of reproducibility for the standards.…”

“…Isotopic intensities were measured using an Agilent 7700 s quadrupole ICPMS, with high-purity Ar as the plasma gas (flow rate 0.98 L min −1 ). The dwell time for all masses was 0.01 s. The primary reference material used for zircon U-Pb dating in this study was the OG-1 zircon standard (3465.4 ± 0.6 Ma; (Stern et al, 2009)) with the following secondary zircon standards: Plešovice (337.13 ± 0.37 Ma; Sláma et al, 2008), R33 (419.26 ± 0.39 Ma;Black et al, 2004), and GJ-1(601.7 ± 1.4 Ma; Jackson et al, 2004). 206 Pb/ 238 U ages calculated for all zircon age standards, treated as unknowns, were within 3% of the accepted values.…”

“…2. No statistically significant isotopologue disequilibrium trends related to age are observed, but only one session (130058) had OG1 grains analysed, and the extreme age of this reference material (Stern et al, 2009) dominates any age-related statistics. The geochronologic results from unknowns M750 and M736 analysed in session 110088 are given in Laurie et al, (2016) alongside ID-TIMS results for the same samples.…”

“…(Black et al, 2004) zircon were analysed, along with 22 grains of R-33 (Black et al, 2004) and 8 grains of OG1 (Stern et al, 2009). In 110057, an oriented Phalabowra baddeleyite mount from the original orientation work (Wingate and Compston, 2000) was analysed, with a dozen analyses on each of the four oriented megacrysts.…”
