Measurement of Significant Marine Paleotemperature Variation Using Black Abalone Shells from Prehistoric Middens

Abstract: The archaeological record from the last millennium in southern California indicates that a period of significant cultural change was associated with a reported marine paleoenvironmental disruption ca. 1150-1250 A.D. A lengthy warm-water anomaly may have in part precipitated more complex sociopolitical and economic responses. We develop independent verification of the perturbation (originally deduced from sediment core data) using archaeological data. Respiratory pore number allometry in the black abalone shell… Show more

“…The relationship between environmental and sociopolitical change has been an important topic of research on the NCI (Arnold 1992a(Arnold , 2001aArnold and Graesch 2004;Arnold and Tissot 1993;Braje et al 2007;Erlandson and Jones 2002;Jazwa et al 2012;Jazwa and Perry 2013;Kennett and Kennett 2000;Kennett et al 2007Raab and Larson 1997;Glassow et al 2012). In parallel, there have been several attempts to generate high-resolution records for sea surface temperature (Arnold and Tissot 1993;Kennett 2005;Kennett and Kennett 2000;Pisias 1978) and drought (Raab and Larson 1997) in the Santa Barbara Channel region.…”

“…In a series of highly influential papers, Arnold (1991Arnold ( , 1992aArnold ( , b, 1993Arnold ( , 1995 proposed that the Chumash on the northern Channel Islands of the southern coast were effected by elevated sea surface temperatures and an associated decline in marine productivity between A.D. 200 and 1200. The period of warm seas was based on a preliminary Holocene sea surface temperature chronology developed by Pisias (1978).…”

“…Subsequent studies continue to document dense concentrations of fish bone in deposits dating to the Medieval Period (Colten, 1995(Colten, , p. 98, 2001Rick, 2004), and there seems to be little remaining justification for associating the MCA with reduced marine productivity (cf. Arnold and Tissot, 1993;Colten, 2001).…”
