Measurement of Regional Myocardial Perfusion in Man with 133Xenon and a Scintillation Camera

Abstract: A B S T R A C T A method was devised to quantitate regional capillary perfusion in the human heart by measuring the clearance constants (k) of Xenon-133 washout from multiple areas of the myocardium with a multiple-crystal scintillation camera. In 17 subjects, "'Xe was injected into the right or left coronary artery or both and counts per second (cps) were recorded simultaneously on magnetic tape from each of 294 scintillation crystals viewing the precordium through a multichannel collimator. Data were process… Show more

“…This technique provides quantitative estimates of capillary perfusion in multiple regions of the heart after the radioisotope is injected into a coronary artery (6,8,12). Computer analysis of the multiple local "3Xe washout curves provides both accurate estimates of tracer clearance from heart muscle and statistical assessments of the accuracy of the measurements.…”

“…More information has been obtained with radioactive`33Xe and a scintillation camera that permits spatial resolution in flow measurements. 3 However, this technique requires intracoronary injections and has been validated only for perfusion rates less than 200 ml/min/100 g. 4 Pulsed Doppler ultrasonography of individual coronary arteries, coupled with the administration of the short-acting coronary vasodilator papaverine, permits the determination of myocardial flow reserve in terms of the ratio of myocardial flow velocities with and without papaverine. 2 This technique has been extensively studied.…”
