Measurement of pion enhancement at low transverse momentum and of the Δ resonance abundance in Si-nucleus collisions at AGS energy

“…7. As seen from this figure, the relative number of nucleons excited to ∆ 0 at freeze-out in p+ 12 C collisions at 4 2 GeV/c is compatible with those obtained in Refs [22,24,39,43]. In [67] the dependences of the multiplicities of charged particles on Q value in p+ 12 C collisions at 4 2 GeV/c were investigated, where Q = + − − − evap with + and − being the numbers of positively and negatively (singly) charged particles in an event, respectively, and evap  the number of protons with lab < 300 MeV/c classified as the evaporated ones.…”

“…The freeze-out temperatures of ∆(1232), produced in Ni+Ni collisions at 1 -2 A GeV and Au+Au collisions at 1 06 A GeV, were extracted in [32,33] from the radial flow analysis. Further in [22] the pion enhancement at low transverse momentum was used to determine ∆(1232) abundance in central 28 Si+Al, Pb collisions at lab = 14 6 GeV/c per nucleon (T beam ≈ 13 7 A GeV), and the freeze-out temperature of the system was extracted using the measured ∆(1232) abundance. It was concluded [22] that in central 28 Si+Pb collisions at 14 6 A GeV/c a fireball is formed with substantial excitation of ∆ baryons which freezes out at T 0 = 138 +23 −18 MeV.…”

“…1 that the exponential fits represent the data very well for all cases except for pions in the low p T # 0.2 GeV region. The discrepancies between data and the fits in this region are most likely due to the resonance decays [11][12][13][14][15]. The slope parameter T, from the Pb 1 Pb collisions at p s 17.2A GeV increases with particle mass and the trend is independent of the sign of the particle under consideration.…”

“…[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9] that a significant fraction of the pions produced in relativistic hadronnucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions in bubble chamber experiments of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR, Dubna, Russia) originated from decay of resonances. The dominant role of resonances in pion production at the energies of the order of a few GeV/nucleon or less was also revealed in earlier papers [10][11][12][13][14]. The decay kinematics of resonances was shown to be responsible for low transverse momentum enhancement of pion spectra in hadron-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions at incident beam energies from 1 to 15 GeV per nucleon [9,13,14].…”
