Measurement of myocardial blood flow by ultrafast computed tomography.

Abstract: Myocardial blood flow was analyzed by radioisotope-labeled microspheres and ultrafast computed tomography (CT) in 16 closed-chest, anesthetized dogs. The first set of 10 dogs had CT and microsphere measurements before and after chromonar-induced increases in myocardial blood flow. A second set of six dogs had flows measured at control and during temporary reductions in regional flow produced by balloon cuff occlusion of the left anterior descending coronary artery. All dogs had four-slice, 20-instance CT scans… Show more

“…For the purpose of constructing timedensity curves, a rapid multi-section scan acquisition was performed at a single level, immediately prior to, and following the rapid, automated injection (60 mL at 20 mL?s -1 ; Angiomat 6000, Liebal-Flarsheim Company, Cincinnati, OH, USA) of radio-opaque contrast material (Omnipaque 300 mgI?mL -1 , Nycomed, Amersham, UK). In each study [15][16][17][18][19][20]6-mm sections were obtained. The acquisition time for each section was 100 ms.…”

“…EBCT measures of perfusion, both in this and in previous animal studies, have tended to be slightly lower in comparison to values obtained using other techniques, possibly due to the limitations of the technique outlined above and the fact that measurement of tissue perfusion with EBCT is based on microsphere algorithms. Consequently, any loss of indicator from the tissue results in an underestimation of the absolute value of perfusion [15,25,26].…”

“…The development of TR-DCECT has enabled the quantitative assessment of blood perfusion in the brain, [26][27][28][29] heart 30,31 and in other organs. In essence, a TR-DCECT exam requires the repetitive scanning of the volume of interest while a contrast agent is administered.…”
