Measurement of mass-angle and mass-total kinetic energy distributions from the fission of ¹⁹⁰Pt compound nucleus

Abstract

We have performed the measurement of fission fragment mass-angle and mass-total kinetic energy distributions (TKE) for the neutron-deficient $^{190}$Pt compound nucleus populated via $^{12}$C + $^{178}$Hf reaction, at around and above barrier energies. No mass-angle correlation was observed in the fission of $^{190}$Pt signifying the absence of quasi-fission events in the studied reaction. The observed mass-total kinetic energy distributions have expected triangular shape and TKE distributions are well described with the single Gaussian fits, and mean total kinetic energy shows parabolic dependence on fragment mass as predicted based on liquid drop (LD) fission behaviour. The widths of measured total kinetic energy distributions agree well with the observed systematics for compound nucleus fission in this mass region. Though the compound nucleus is relatively neutron deficient, these observations suggest a clear picture of true compound nucleus fission behaviour for the chosen reaction in the studied energy domain.\\
