Change of ra don con cen tra tions in dwell ings with floor level was stud ied in six multi-story build ings, in four towns of Montenegro with dif fer ent cli mate con di tions. The an nual av erage ra don ac tiv ity con cen tra tions in 35 dwell ings are found to be very low, mostly at a level of 20-30 Bqm-3. Ab sorbed gamma dose rates in these dwell ings are in the range of 14-58 nGyh-1. The low ra don con cen tra tions are a con se quence of a good tight ness of the struc tures in con tact with the ground and a small con tri bu tion of build ing ma te ri als to ra don in doors. A clear gen eral trend of changes in ra don con cen tra tions with floor level is not ob served. In most of the dwell ings on dif fer ent floors in the multi-story build ing ra don con cen tra tion varies very lit tle, mostly within mea sure ment er ror. A small de crease in ra don con cen tra tion is noted be tween the two or three floors clos est to the ground, but only in some of the build ings. There fore, a de crease of in door ra don con cen tra tion with floor level can not be con sid ered as a gen eral char ac ter is tic of multi-story build ings. Al though the sea sonal ra don vari a tions have not been in the fo cus of this study, it was found that the av er age ra don ac tiv ity con cen tra tions in dwell ings of the multi-story build ings are higher in warmer than in cooler half-year pe riod, what is con trary to the gen eral rule for homes in the world and in Montenegro as well.

Human beings are constantly exposed to radioactivity in the environment. As they are major sources of harmful radiation, radionuclides found in the atmosphere might result in a substantial potential risk to living beings. On the Earth's surface, the radioactive elements uranium and radium are naturally present, contributing to radon and thoron gases in the indoor as well as outdoor climate, soil and water. Radon is one of the most important toxins that, after cigarette smoking, is the second most common cause of generating lung cancer. Due to these health-related concerns, a lot of work has been undertaken by numerous research organizations to determine their levels at different locations throughout the world. This paper is an attempt to comprehensively report with different techniques all those studies being carried out in this part of India so that a current assessment of the indoor radon levels should be available for further work in this field. Six northern Indian states, viz. Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan , Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand are considered for this examination. This study also provides data on exhalation rates and activity concentration of natural radionuclides (226Ra, 232Th, and 40K) present in these states.

The in door low gamma dose rate ex po sures due to Egyp tian room build ing ma te ri als are assessed by means of three dif fer ent tech niques: ex per i men tally by us ing a thermoluminescent do sim e ter, the o ret i cally by us ing the gen eral room model and by the Monte Carlo sim u la tion through the RESRAD-BUILD soft ware. The pres ent study aims at val i dat ing the the o ret i cal meth ods so that it can be am ply used for mea sur ing the low dose rates usu ally as so ci ated with the build ing ma te ri als. The mea sured in door dose rates were in the range of 55.92 ± 14.47 to 86.89 ± 16.68 nGyh-1 de pend ing on the po si tion in side the room as ob tained by the thermoluminescent do sim e ter af ter 5 months' ac cu mu la tion. Lower dose rates are ob tained near the door and win dows while higher dose rates are ob tained at the cen ter of the room, and close to the ex tended walls. Com pa ra ble re sults of the dose rates at same po si tions in side the room are ob tained by the RESRAD-BUILD soft ware. The room model is re stricted to the room cen ter and also gives com pa ra ble re sults. The three meth ods showed com pa ra ble re sults, which in turn con firm the rec om men da tion of us ing the o ret i cal ones, with RESRAD-BUILD soft ware be ing more ac cu rate.
