Measurement of hard double-parton interactions inW(→ℓν) + 2-jet events at $\sqrt{s}\,=7$ TeV with the ATLAS detector

Abstract: The production of W bosons in association with two jets in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of √ s = 7 TeV has been analysed for the presence of double-parton interactions using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36 pb −1 , collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The fraction of events arising from double-parton interactions, f (D) DP , has been measured through the p T balance between the two jets and amounts to f (D) DP = 0.08 ± 0.01 (stat.) ± 0.02 (s… Show more

“…A more solid theoretical understanding of double hard scattering with jets or heavy quarks would be of great practical value, because such processes have much higher rates than double Drell-Yan production and were already studied experimentally at the Tevatron [93][94][95][96][97][98] and in Run 1 of the LHC [99][100][101][102][103][104]. Further in-depth studies can surely be expected from Run 2.…”

“…Indeed, the four jets final state is a good channel to measure the DPS [3][4][5][6][7], but triggering the jets is challenging in high-energy hadron collisions. In contrast, the W ⊗ jj and Z ⊗ jj processes exhibit charged leptons in the final state and can be easily detected [8][9][10]. The pure electroweak processes, W AE ⊗ W ∓ or W AE ⊗ Z, have sizable production rates, but it is challenging to extract them from the enormous SPS diboson backgrounds.…”

“…[38]). In this paper, we use the world-average value of σ eff ¼ 15 mb provided by several experiments at Tevatron [39][40][41] and LHC [4,[42][43][44][45]. Future experiments may verify this value and establish a systematics.…”
