Measurement of discontinuous displacement/strain using mesh-based digital image correlation

Abstract: In this study, a method for evaluating discontinuous displacement and strain distributions using digital image correlation (DIC) is proposed. A finite element mesh-based DIC method is used for measuring displacements while taking into account displacement and strain discontinuities. Smoothed displacements are thus obtained, and strains are computed from the measured displacements using the finite element mesh again. Discontinuous strains can be obtained by the proposed method using a split finite element mesh.… Show more

“…The length of 1 mm corresponds to Various algorithms have been proposed for digital image correlation. In this study, a global digital image correlation algorithm (Yoneyama et al, 2016) employing a finite element mesh to search for displacements at all nodes simultaneously is used. Figure 2 shows the finite element model for global digital image correlation used in this study.…”

“…Ncorr software (LabVIEW, National Instruments, Austin, TX, USA) was used to detect the changes in the location of the dots during the DIC analysis. The strain along the X-direction (Ɛxx), shear strain (Ɛxy), and strain along the Y-direction (Ɛyy), was calculated according to previous studies (Pan et al 2009;Canal et al 2012;Caminero et al 2013;Harilal et al 2015;Yoneyama et al 2016;Guoqing Gu et al 2017;Barile et al 2019).…”

“…One way to understand the damage behavior around the fiber discontinuity area is to experimentally measure the strain around the resin pocket caused by fiber discontinuity. Many studies have employed the DIC and ESPI methods to measure the strain distributions in composite laminates [24][25][26][27][28][29]. Compared to DIC and ESPI, moiré and GPA methods are grid-based techniques possessing strong resistance to noise despite the need for grids.…”
