Ananas comosus L. (Merr.) (pineapple) was grown at three day/night temperatures and 350 (ambient) and 700 (elevated) µmol mol -1 CO 2 to examine the interactive effects of these factors on leaf gas exchange and stable carbon isotope discrimination (∆,‰). All data were collected on the youngest mature leaf for 24 h every 6 weeks. CO 2 uptake (mmol m -2 d -1 ) at ambient and elevated CO 2 , respectively, were 306 and 352 at 30/20°C, 175 and 346 at 30/25°C and 187 and 343 at 35/25°C. CO 2 enrichment enhanced CO 2 uptake substantially in the day in all environments. Uptake at night at elevated CO 2 , relative to that at ambient CO 2 , was unchanged at 30/20°C, but was 80% higher at 30/25°C and 44% higher at 35/25°C suggesting that phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase was not CO 2 -saturated at ambient CO 2 levels and a 25°C night temperature. Photosynthetic water use efficiency (WUE) was higher at elevated than at ambient CO 2 . Leaf ∆-values were higher at elevated than at ambient CO 2 due to relatively higher assimilation in the light. Leaf ∆ was significantly and linearly related to the fraction of total CO 2 assimilated at night. The data suggest that a simultaneous increase in CO 2 level and temperature associated with global warming would enhance carbon assimilation, increase WUE, and reduce the temperature dependence of CO 2 uptake by A. comosus.

Native upland species, Nardus stricta, Eriophorum vaginatum, Erica cinerea and Vaccinium vitis-idaea were given 3 or 60 kg N ha −" yr −" , over 2 yr, applied as a mist (NH % NO $ ). The high N treatment increased above-ground biomass in all four species, but only significantly in E. cinerea, E. vaginatum and N. stricta. Biomass increases in E. vaginatum and N. stricta resulted from enhanced tiller production rather than shoot elongation. Root growth increased in N. stricta, so that root : shoot ratio in this species was unchanged by N. Root growth in E. vaginatum, E. cinerea and V. vitis-idaea did not respond to N and their root : shoot ratios decreased. Tissue N concentrations increased in both shoots and roots of all species in response to N. The accumulated foliar N did not increase the proportion of N allocated to Rubisco and the photosynthetic capacities of N. stricta, E. vaginatum and V. vitisidaea were unchanged. Thus growth responses to N were due to altered allocation rather than increased rate of photosynthesis per unit leaf area. The high N treatment increased flower production significantly in E. cinerea but not in the other species. Although in this experiment dwarf shrubs were more responsive than graminoids to N, in the field at current N inputs the enhanced tillering of the graminoids may be more competitively advantageous, especially where gaps develop in the canopy. Thus increasing N deposition may lead to increased grassiness of upland heath, and in particular, a spread of N. stricta.

SUMMARYAssessments of ozone sensitivity in tree species have been based primarily on studies of seedlings without any knowledge of the similarities between seedling and mature tree responses. To detemiine if seedlings and trees responded similarly to ozone, 2-yr-old seedlings and 30-yr-old trees of Quercus rubra L. were fumigated with subambient, ambient and twice-ambient ozone for one growing seasoti (cumulative doses of 18, 45 and 87 ppm h^', respectively). Carboxylation efficiency, apparent quantum yield and light-saturated tiet photosytithesis of leaves from the lower canopy of the 30-yr-old trees were reduced by ambient and twice-ambient ozone treatment. However, physiological characteristics of leaves from the upper canopy of trees showed no signs of ozone injury. Canopy leaf dry weight of trees was redueed by the twice-ambient ozotie treatment through reductions in leaf area rather thati specific leaf weight, but bole diameter and branch growth of trees were unaffected by ozone treatment. In contrast, ozone did not influence leaf physiology of second Hush leaves, stem diameter, and height and biomass growth of 2-yr-old seedlings. These results indicate that for deciduous hardwood species, studies of seedlings may underestimate the ozone sensitivity of larger and more physiologieally mature trees. For large trees with developed canopies, leaf position within the canopy may infiuence the sensitivity of physiological processes to ozone.
