“…The first atmospheric measurements were reported in the late 1970s (Rasmussen et al, 1979) and it has a current tropospheric abundance in the region of 75 ppt (Khalil et al, 2003;Worton et al, 2007;Mühle et al, 2010). Other identified PFCs include C 2 F 6 , first reported by Penkett et al (1981), C 3 F 8 (Culbertson et al, 2000) and c-C 4 F 8 Sturges et al, 2000).…”

“…He also presented profiles of the altitude distribution of CF4 predicted for the years 1965, 1980, 2015, and 2105, based on an assumed tropospheric emission rate and various possible loss mechanisms ('sinks'). Measurement of the presence of CF4 in the troposphere by Gassman [1974] and later confirmed by Rasmussen et al [1979] raises the question as to the origin of this constituent. Industrial sources do appear to contribute to the observed atmospheric CF4 so that the predictions of Cicerone [1979] indicate the possible importance of another anthropogenically released halogen constituent in our atmosphere.…”

“…Carbon tetrafluoride (CF 4 ) was detected in the air of several European countries by Gassman in 1973 (/) and in both hemispheres of the troposphere by Rasmussen et al (2) in 1978. This compound is probably the most stable fluorocarbon gas.…”
