Measurement of 222RN concentration in drinking water in Sakarya, Turkey

Abstract: In this paper, the first measurement of (222)Rn concentrations in drinking water from wells, springs and bottled waters in the city of Sakarya, Turkey was presented. The measurements were performed using RAD 7, a solid-state alpha detector, with RAD H2O (radon in water) accessory manufactured by Durridge Company, Inc. The measured activity concentrations ranged from 1.98 to 20.80 Bq l(-1) with an average value of 9.05 Bq l(-1) for well water, from 0.75 to 59.65 Bq l(-1) with an average value of 13.78 Bq l(-1) … Show more

“…The wells developed for creation of a permanent hydrogeological monitoring network should also be included in the list of water points tested for radon. Experience of conducting radonometry for the purpose of seismic forecasting, seismotectonics and ecology in Turkey was reported in [11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19]. Such studies should not be postponed, given a sufficiently tight schedule of the entire facility construction.…”

“…In this study, soil gas and ground water radon was monitored together in five sites along 200 km at the North Anatolian Fault Zone, Bolu, Turkey (Friedmann et al, 1988). In recent years, there have been many studies on determination of water radon concentrations in terms of radiological risk (Yakut, Tabar, Zenginerler, Demirci & Ertugral, 2013;Yalcin et al, 2011). There are limited numbers of study performed in Turkey which are focused on water radon levels to understand its relation with earthquake/seismic events (Baykara & Dogru, 2006;Erees, Yener, Salk, & € Ozbal, 2006;Erees et al, 2007;Inan et al, 2010;K€ ulahcı & C ß ic ßek, 2015;Tsvetkova, Nevinsky, Suyatin, Akkurt, & Kulali, 2016;Yalim, Sandikcioglu, Unal, & Orhun, 2007 (Dewey & Sengor, 1979;McKenzie, 1972;Vengosh, Helvacı, & Karamanderesi, 2002).…”

“…Produced atoms of 222 Rn escape from the soil and enter the air or water filled pores and move through the atmosphere [2]. When a building is present on its way, radon can enter it through openings around drains, construction joints, cracks in walls, crawl spaces, and in some cases from well water [3].…”

“…When a building is present on its way, radon can enter it through openings around drains, construction joints, cracks in walls, crawl spaces, and in some cases from well water [3]. The primary hazards of radon are due to the inhalation of its short-lived decay products namely 218 Po and 214 Po [2]. They tend to attach to the aerosols in the atmosphere.…”
