Cognitive training for robotic surgery: a chance to optimize surgical training? A pilot study

The rapid rise of robotic-assisted surgery (RAS) has necessitated an efficient and standardized training curriculum. Cognitive training (CT) can significantly improve skills, such as attention, working memory and problem solving, and can enhance surgical capacity and support RAS training. This pilot study was carried out between 02/2019 and 04/2019. The participants included 33 student volunteers, randomized into 3 groups: group 1 received training using the da Vinci training simulator, group 2 received computer-based cognitive training, and group 3 was the control group without training. Before (T1) and after-training (T2), performance was measured. Additionally, expert ratings and self-evaluations were collected. Subjective evaluations of performance were supplemented by evaluations based on three scales from the revised NEO Personality Inventory (NEO PI-R). In total, 25 probands remained with complete data for further analyses: n = 8 (group 1), n = 7 (group 2) and n = 10 (group 3). There were no significant differences in T1 and T2 among all three groups. The average training gain of group 1 and 2 was 15.87% and 24.6%, respectively, (a restricting condition is the loss of the last training session in group 2). Analyses of semi-structured psychological interviews (SPIs) revealed no significant differences for T1, but in T2, significance occurred at ‘self-reflection’ for group 2 (F(2.22) = 8.56; p < .005). The efficacy of CT in training highly complex and difficult procedures, such as RAS, is a proven and accepted fact. Further investigation involving higher numbers of training trials (while also being cost effective) should be performed.

Broadband Learning Center adalah program pelatihan komputer gratis yang disediakan oleh Pemerintah Kota Surabaya yang bertujuan untuk menjawab permasalahan di Surabaya seperti masyarakat yang kurang menguasai teknologi dan meningkatkan produktivitas dalam menggunakan teknologi. Broadband Learning Center telah memiliki 52 titik lokasi yang sudah menyebar di seluruh wilayah Surabaya salah satunya di Taman Prestasi Surabaya. Dalam program Broadband Learning Center tersebut masih terdapat kendala seperti kurang meratanya informasi mengenai Broadband Learning Center kepada seluruh lapisan masyarakat dan kendala dalam pelaksanaan pelatihan. Tujuan penelitian ini untuk memberikan gambaran terkait dampak program Broadband Learning Center di Taman Prestasi Surabaya. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dan menggunakan penelitian studi kepustakaan (library research) yang dimana data diperoleh dari literatur-literatur terkait dengan topik penelitian seperti makalah, artikel, jurnal dan berita dari website (internet). Hasil penelitian ini menyatakan bahwa program Broadband Learning Center di Taman Prestasi Surabaya berdampak pada Individu dengan adanya kemudahan mendaftar dan meningkatkan kemampuan di bidang teknologi. Dampak pada organisasional yaitu adanya penghargaan untuk Pemerintah Kota Surabaya yang didapat melalui program Broadband Learning Center ini. Pelatihan ini juga berdampak pada peningkatan kepercayaan masyarakat terhadap instansi pemerintah dan berdampak pada lembaga sosial atau sistem sosial seperti lembaga pendidikan dan lembaga ekonomi. Saran dalam pelaksanaan Broadband Learning Center ini yaitu mensosialisasikan program secara berkala, mengupgrade sarana prasarana untuk pelatihan dan menambah variasi materi yang lain sehingga dapat menarik minat masyarakat. Kata Kunci: Dampak, Broadband Learning Center. The Broadband Learning Center is a complimentary computer training program provided by the Surabaya Government which aims to answer the problems in Surabaya, such as people who are clueless about technology to increase their productivity in using technology. This Broadband Learning Center has 52 location points that have spread throughout the Surabaya area, one of them is located in Taman Prestasi Surabaya. In the implementation of the Broadband Learning Center program, there are still have obstacles such as the lack of even information about the Broadband Learning Center to all levels of society and constraints in the implementation of training. This research aims to provide an overview of the impact evaluation of the Broadband Learning Center program in Taman Prestasi. This research uses a qualitative approach and uses library research. The data is obtained from literature related to the research topics from papers, articles, journals, and news from websites (internet). The results of this research state that the Broadband Learning Center program in Taman Prestasi Surabaya impacts individuals with the ease of registering and increasing skills in the field of technology. The organizational impact is an award for the Surabaya City Government obtained through the Broadband Learning Center program. This training also impacts increasing public trust in institutions government and impacts social institutions or social systems such as educational institutions and economic institutions. Suggestions on implementing the Broadband Learning Center are to regularly socialize the program, upgrade the infrastructure for training, and add a variety of other materials to attract public interest. A conclusion on the need of the reciprocal movement of employers and educators in the process of formulating specialist competencies was drawn on the base of the analysis of the priorities of the European Commission. The justification for the principles of the formulation of competencies based on the functions of the activities that are determined by the employer is proposed. The basic oxonmetric proposals for the formulation of the functions of the activity have been developed and substantiated. The design, material, technological, instrumental managerial, business functions were identified. Proposed functions are compared with the curriculum for training specialists in several areas. The principles of measuring of learning outcomes based on Dublin descriptors are defined. It was proposed to strengthen the share of the "autonomy and responsibility" descriptor, the justifications for its formation and measurements are given. For this descriptor in the formation of all the components of competence, formulated with the functions of the activity, it is recommended to provide a real practical result. The forms of training, the most rational for the formation of learning outcomes in accordance with the descriptors of "knowledge", "skills", "communication", "autonomy and responsibility" are substantiated. A matrix model for the formation of competencies based on learning outcomes has been developed. A qualimetric approach to the measurement of learning outcomes is substantiated, on the basis of which the result of training is formed in an explicit form. A criterion for the formation of competences in the form of the surface of learning outcomes is proposed. The real level of competence of a specialist is compared with the requirements of the employer. The possibility of a non-stationary level of learning outcomes was revealed.Comparison of a given and real competence of a specialist should be made by groups of experts in the conditions of the counter policy of employers and educational institutions. The proposed approaches are implemented in the preparation of curricula for a number of specialties.
