Measurement and predictive value of susceptibility to cigarettes, e-cigarettes, cigars, and hookah among Texas adolescents

Abstract: Susceptibility to cigarette smoking, defined as the lack of a firm commitment not to smoke in the future, begins in childhood and is a phase in the transition from never to ever use of cigarettes. While a consistent and validated predictor of cigarette use, little research has assessed whether the susceptibility construct applies equally well across other tobacco products. Baseline data were collected in 2014–2015 from a representative sample of (n = 2844) middle and high school students in five counties surro… Show more

“…Students could answer on a 4-point Likert scale, ranging from “definitely yes” to “definitely not”. Similar to other studies [4,5,6,7], non-susceptible never users responded “definitely not” to the question targeting cigarettes or e-cigarettes, while susceptible never users provided any other response to the question targeting cigarettes or e-cigarettes. Students were provided with a picture and description of the tobacco products in the survey.…”

“…Pierce and colleagues [2,3] used a series of questions to identify and label adolescents who have never smoked cigarettes and are not committed to remaining smoke-free as susceptible to future smoking. The validity of this measure for identifying students at risk of cigarette and e-cigarette use has been supported in many studies [4,5,6,7]. However, even if the intention is present, access to these products is critical in order to try them.…”

“…Susceptibility to smoking (SS) or the lack of a cognitive commitment to refrain from future smoking which was introduced by Pierce et al 11 has been recognised as a valid and reliable tool to identify non-smoking adolescents who are at risk of initiating smoking 12–14. The conceptual validity of the SS spurred the conduct of various studies to identify factors associated with smoking susceptibility among adolescents.…”

“…Among these dimensions, curiosity and ease-ofuse are strong predictors of tobacco use behaviors. Tobacco product curiosity correlates with product susceptibility and use among youth 14,28 . Youth who perceived flavored smokeless tobacco and flavored e-cigarettes as easier to use than unflavored options were more likely to be susceptible to smokeless tobacco use 17 and to initiate future e-cigarette use 16 , respectively.…”
