Measles Outbreak Associated With an International Youth Sporting Event in the United States, 2007

Abstract: Measles outbreaks associated with imported disease are likely to continue in the US. Participants in international events, international travelers, and persons with routine exposure to such travelers might be at greater risk of measles. To reduce the impact of imported cases, high measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine coverage rates should be maintained throughout the US, and support should continue for global measles control and elimination.

“…Non-vaccination, delay in vaccination, and poor compliance with vaccine schedules can all lead to outbreaks, which represent a health risk for the population and a costly and time-consuming event for healthcare departments and society. Several studies have assessed the economic burden of vaccine-preventable disease outbreaks such as pertussis and measles [51][52][53][54]. In 2000, a hospital outbreak of 91 pertussis cases occurred in France, representing a total cost of €46,661 and a productivity loss for healthcare workers of 42% [51].…”

“…60,73 In 2008 alone, 140 measles cases were reported to CDC, more than double the average number of measles cases reported yearly from 2000 to 2007. 53,62 According to CDC, "This increase was not the result of a greater number of imported cases, but was the result of greater viral transmission after importation into the United States…" 53 Nine measles outbreaks accounted for 74% of reported cases in 2008.…”

“…Recently, outbreaks have been witnessed in mass sporting events, such as the World Cup football in Germany and the Winter Olympic games in Vancouver, Canada, in 2010 [4]. European measles cases have also been exported to the measles-free Americas, further illustrating the potential international implications of national measles outbreaks [29]. Most recently, outbreaks of measles within general populations have occurred, notably in France with 2000 cases in the first 5 months of 2010 [101].…”
