The problems of the family institution are reflected in the family values transformation. The patterns of family and marriage relations which are traditional for historical Russia come into conflict with modern realities. This transformation affects primarily the youth environment, putting young people in front of a tough choice between socially approved career growth and a quiet feat inconspicuous to the world within family relationships. The all-Russian study “Self-regulation of the Life of Young People in a Changing Social Reality”, conducted in the fall of 2020, revealed problematic aspects of marital relations. The traditional values of the family, which are historically common for Russia, are opposed to a set of modern values characteristic of the liberal model and sometimes inferior to the latter. The course laid down by the founders of communism to eliminate the monogamous family as an economic unit of society gives its late shoots refracting in the individualization of society, leveling the significance of official marriage unions and reducing the number of children in families. The results of the all-Russian sociological survey of young people make it possible to identify the real marital status of young people in Russia and to consider its models. The article analyzes the prevalence of so-called “civil marriages” and the correction of attitudes towards them by official bodies. The author gives the rationale for the growing popularity of the “Japanese model” in marital relations, as well as the reasons that push young people to short-term marriage unions fraught with loneliness. The nature of young people relationship with their parents is considered and different generations of youth are compared. The idea of the respondents about the meaning of the family is investigated and the main motives for marriage are established. The number of children in modern youth families is revealed and trends in various social groups are analyzed. Conclusions are drawn about the instability of the family institution in the modern world and the need to protect it by the state.

Introduction. The family, being one of the most important social institutions, is subject to significant changes that occur in society and in its social organization. However, the direction of family transformations does not immediately become obvious, which actualizes their scientific understanding on the basis of sociological measurements. The purpose of the article is to identify the attitude of student youth in the South of Russia to the nature of the transformations taking place in the modern institution of the family and, on their basis, to formulate generalizing conclusions and recommendations. The importance of such research is determined by the special role of the student social group in ensuring the sustainability of society and in shaping its future appearance. Materials and Methods. The object of the study was student youth of the South of Russia. The empirical basis of the study was the results of a survey of full-time students at 13 universities and university branches in the South of Russia (Rostov Region, Krasnodar and Stavropol Territories) based on a representative sample (n = 639). The questionnaire survey method made it possible to identify some of the students’ attitudes and aspirations regarding the institutional state of the family. The conceptual basis of the study was the constructivist approach, which considers the most important theoretical meanings and trajectories of the process of family transformation (crisis and modernist) as social constructs that influence students’ perception of the direction of development of the family institution. Results. Analysis of the collected empirical material shows a certain duality in the position of student youth in the South of Russia in determining priority trajectories for the development of the family institution. This is evidenced by students’ perception of the crisis and modernist constructs of family transformation through the analysis of their main indicators (the state of attractiveness of a family-child lifestyle; attitude to the dominance of having few children and having one child; perception of childfreeness; attitude to divorce and cohabitation, etc.). The survey also revealed a certain predominance among students of negative assessments of the influence of individualistic value sentiments on the institutional stability of the family. Discussion and Conclusion. Using the example of the southern region of Russia, the conclusion was confirmed that the worldview, socio-economic and information-cognitive state of society influences the priority of perception of various trajectories of transformation of the family institution (crisis and modernization). The attitude of students to semantic indicators of their perception is ambiguous. This is largely due to the heterogeneity of value orientations in our society. The practical significance of the study lies in the fact that it made it possible to identify the opinion of student youth about their attitude to the current state of the family institution and the prospects for its development. The results obtained may be useful to scientists studying this issue, as well as practitioners forming and implementing youth policy.

The article reveals the correlation of terminal (development of abilities, need for knowledge, general culture) and instrumental (diploma, opportunity to make a career, prestige) meanings of education. It based on a comparative analysis of the ideas of higher education among students and other groups of young people in education. The methodological basis of the study is the concept of self-regulation of the life of young people. An analysis of the connections between the terminal and instrumental meanings of education and other elements of the socio-cultural mechanism of self-regulation of life activity (archetypes, mental traits, value orientations towards knowledge, habitual attitudes, subcultural meanings), belonging to the basic types of cultures made it possible to determine the trends in attitudes towards education of student and student youth. The tendency to instrumentalize the value attitude to the education of university students and young people in general is stable. It was revealed that the meanings of education correlate less significantly with archetypes and mentality. Subcultural meanings as properties of a generation, containing various kinds of “activities” and elements of demonstrative behavior, have significant connections with the instrumental meanings of education and, on the contrary, in some cases their denial – with the terminal ones. A similar paradoxical relationship between the terminal and instrumental meanings of the education of student youth is also recorded in correlations with the denial of belonging to the innovative and spiritual types of basic culture, which significantly distinguishes it from student youth. As sociocultural factors in the formation of ideas about the meanings of education of student youth, the type of settlement, the level of income, the level of education of parents are singled out. Ideas about the meanings of education of university students are considered in relation to the institutional regulation of higher education. It is concluded that the steady trend of instrumentalizing the attitude of student youth to education is consistent with such a direction of purposeful regulation of higher education as the practice orientation of educational programs. Education is understood as a means of increasing the manageability of one’s life, which means increasing the level of social certainty.
