High density residential development in metropolitan Melbourne, where contradictory imperatives of neighbourhood character and urban intensification play important roles, remains an uncertain practice. One key issue for plan implementation is the lack of consistency between authorities, developers and the community in interpreting the standards, design guidelines, and state/local strategies, especially those relating to neighbourhood character. There is currently no mechanism to incorporate community perceptions and place experiences as subjective aspects of neighbourhood character in development assessments. There is also little use of micro-scale and multi-dimensional spatial analysis to integrate these subjective aspects with objective measures (e.g. building volume and height; streetscape) to communicate effectively-and in a limited timeframe-with all stakeholders. This paper explores the potential of two emerging geospatial technologies that can be leveraged to respond to these problems. Evidence in the literature suggests that volunteered geographic information (VGI) can provide community input around subjective aspects of the urban environment. In addition, a deluge of three-dimensional (3D) spatial information (e.g. 3D city models) is increasingly available for micro-level (building-or property-level) assessment of the physical aspects of the urban environment. This paper formulates and discusses a conceptual framework to link these two spatial technological advancements in a virtual geographic environment (VGE) that accounts for micro-scale 3D spatial analysis incorporating both subjective and objective aspects of neighbourhood character relevant in implementing compact city strategies.

ÖZ: Bu araştırmada, okul koridorlarının iç mekânında kullanılan farklı renklerin (krem, mavi ve yeşil) öğrencilerin algısal performansı üzerindeki etkilerinin belirlenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Bu maksatla, Ankara'da bulunan İncirli Teknik ve Endüstri Meslek Lisesi koridorları araştırma ortamı olarak seçilmiştir. Öğrencilerin üç farklı renge sahip koridorları 11 sıfat çiftinden oluşan anlamsal farklılaşma ölçeği ile değerlendirmeleri sağlanmıştır. Elde edilen veriler istatistiksel olarak değerlendirilmiş ve önemli sonuçlara ulaşılmıştır. Buna göre, farklı renklerin kullanıldığı koridorlardan; krem renkli mekânın mavi ve yeşil renkli mekâna oranla daha pozitif algılandığı tespit edilmiştir. Ayrıca, okula yeni başlayan öğrencilerin üst sınıflarda okuyan öğrencilere oranla mekân algılamalarında daha olumlu yaklaşıma sahip oldukları görülmektedir. Elde edilen verilerin, eğitim yapılarının, öğrencileri tarafından algılanan mekânsal imajının pekiştirilmesine katkı sağlayacağı ve okulları ile ilgili memnuniyetlerinin arttırılmasında kullanılabileceği düşünülmektedir. Anahtar sözcükler: eğitim yapıları, koridorlar, mekânsal algı, renk, ışık ABSTRACT: In this research, the effects of different colors (cream, blue and green) used in interior space of school corridors on perceptual performances of students were tried to be determined. For this purpose, the corridors of İncirli Technical and Industry Vocational High School in Ankara was selected as the research environment. Students were requested to evaluate the corridors with three different colors by means of using semantic differentiation scale consisting of 11 adjective pairs. Gained data were statistically evaluated and important results were reached. As a result of this study it was determined that cream colored space is perceived more positively in corridors used different colors compared to blue and green colored space. Also it is seen that beginner students have more positive approaches in their space perceptions compared to students studying in upper classes. According to the data obtained, it is considered that education building will have contributions to strengthen the spatial image perceived by students and may be used to increase the satisfaction of students about their schools. This paper summarizes an individual theoretical study on how the landscape could be shaped by economic globalization and political restructuring. Providing a socio-cultural approach to the landscape notion I am trying to discover through the international literature the subjective dimension on landscape definition, in order to understand its 'cultural dimension'. In this paper, the notion of 'virtual landscape' is introduced in order to investigate the incoherence that exists in the nowadays megacities regarding their social reality and their iconic existence through architecture and urban planning. In addition, it is also explored in theory how an ideological turn is re-inforced through political orientation focusing on 'virtual landscape' images in order to obtain a favorable publicity in a contemporary context of 'globalised cities' consisting in the elimination of the 'cultural landscape'. Therefore, this contribution has as main objective to define, negotiate and start the debate on radical socio-cultural approaches of landscape notion in the nowadays 'megacities', inside a strict capitalist context.
