Meandering Spiral Waves in the 1,4-Cyclohexanedione Belousov−Zhabotinsky System Catalyzed by Fe[batho(SO3)2]34-/3-

Abstract: Meandering spiral waves are observed in the 1,4-cyclohexanedione Belousov-Zhabotinsky (CHD-BZ) reaction at very low concentrations (3-35 mM) of the organic substrate. The spiral tips describe hypocycle-like trajectories indicating the presence of two main rotation periods and radii. The ratio of these periods approaches 1 for decreasing concentrations of CHD. In this limit, we find Z-shaped trajectories with approximately two lobes. The use of Fe[batho(SO 3 ) 2 ] 3 4-/3-as the BZ catalyst gives rise to extreme… Show more

“…As the redox catalyst we use FebathoSO 3 3 4ÿ 3 (25 mM) because of its high contrast between the reduced and oxidized state [15]. Very similar results are also obtained with Fephen 2=3 3 (ferroin/ferriin) at smaller NaBrO 3 .…”

“…1͑c͒ is similar to the examples published by our group in Refs. 40 While surveying various reaction conditions with mixed catalysts, we discovered that merging and tracking behavior can cause profound variations in pulse width. We reemphasize that under these experimental conditions, solitary pulses are unstable and finite wave trains can only ex-pand through repeated propagation failures.…”

“…However, the role of counterion moiety associated with the metal salt as the catalyst is not reported extensively in the literature, although Lee and Jwo [20] studied the behavior of [Mn 2+ ]/[Mn 3+ ] using a combination of Ce 4+ and Mn(CH 3 COO) 2 . Also, the complex behavior of Fe 2+ and Ru 2+ with different ligands such as pyridine, bipyridine, and phenanthroline and batho(SO 3 ) 2 with Fe 2+ was monitored to understand the effect of complexation on the oscillatory characteristics [21]. The motive of the present investigation is to study the effect of different counterions of organic as well as of inorganic nature associated with manganese ion solution as the catalyst on the oscillatory characteristics of the resorcinol-based BZ system in 1.3 mol L −1 sulfuric acid as aqueous acid medium.…”
