Introduction: There are several studies on the relationship between increased mean platelet volume (MPV) and varicocele. �e inves� �e inves� tigated the relationship between preoperative and 6�month post� operative MPV values in patients whose varicocele was corrected with surgery. Methods: A total of 282 patients underwent surgery at our urology clinic between December 2011 and December 2013 for primary varicocele. �e retrospectively examined the records of 61 patients who came to the 6�month postoperative follow�up. The preop� erative varicocele diagnosis was made with physical examination findings and supported with colour Doppler ultrasonography. Results: The varicocele was grade I in 12 patients, grade II in 34 patients and grade III in 11 patients. �hen the preoperative and 6�month postoperative haemoglobin (Hb), MPV, mean corpuscular volume, platelet, and platelet distribution width (PD�) values were compared, there was a significant decrease in MPV (p = 0.019), and a significant increase in Hb (p < 0.001). A noticeable increase was also present in PD�, but it was not statistically significant (p = 0.058). Conclusion: �e found that MPV increased in patients with varic� ocele and tended to decrease again after the varicocele was sur� gically corrected. However, we feel larger prospective series are needed.

In this study, we aimed to evaluate the effect of CPAP treatment on hemograms of patients with severe OSA in the lack of comorbidities which might affect the real values of hematological parameters.This retrospective cohort study patients selected from those whose polysomnography reports were compatible with severe OSAS and who underwent PAP titration in our sleep medicine department. 49 patients were enrolled to the study. The baseline hemograms of the participants were collected from one of the patients' visits before they started to use CPAP devices. The control hemograms were evaluated from one of the control visits in the first six months of treatment. We examined the red cell distribution width (RDW), mean platelet volume (MPV), hemotocrit (Hct) and platelet (Plt) count from the hemograms.The mean age was 58.2 years ± 11.3 years, 38.8% were female and 61.2% were male. 69.4% were non-smokers and 30.6% were ex-smokers. The mean body mass index (BMI) was 31.6 ± 5.8 while the mean apnea hypopnea index (AHI) was 50.2 ± 29. The mean duration of CPAP therapy was 4.8 months ± 3.3 months. The mean RDW, MPV, Hct and Plt count values before CPAP treatment were in normal ranges of laboratory tests. All of the values reduced after CPAP therapy but only the decrease in MPV was statistically significant.The reduced values supported that CPAP treatment helped to control hypercoagulability and prevented from cardiovascular disorders in OSAS. Hemogram may be a cheap and easily found laboratory test for monitoring the response to CPAP therapy.

Objective: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) syndrome is a common disorder that can cause hypercoagulation. Mean platelet volume (MPV) and platelet distribution width (PDW) are associated with hypercoagulability. This study aimed to investigate whether MPV and PDW values change in patients with OSA who were treated with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) device.Methods: A total of 43 adult patients with OSA who were treated with CPAP were included in this retrospective study. Patients who underwent CPAP treatment for <5 days/week and <4 h/day were excluded. Blood parameters, including MPV and PDW, were recorded before CPAP treatment and at the third month of CPAP treatment. All patients underwent polysomnographic evaluation with full night polysomnography and in the second night CPAP titration was performed together with full night polysomnography and MPV and PDW values were statistically compared before and after CPAP treatment.Results: Apnea hypopnea index was significantly reduced, whereas oxygen saturation was significantly increased at CPAP titration night (p<0.001). The third month of CPAP treatment resulted in significantly low PDW (p=0.004) values, but MPV values did not change. Conclusion:PDW value at the third month of CPAP treatment revealed a significant improvement compared with the values before treatment; moreover, no change was observed in MPV values. It was concluded that in patients with OSA who were treated with CPAP, activation of platelets may result in recovery.
