Mean platelet volume is increased in patients with severe obstructive sleep apnea

Abstract: Increased platelet activation and aggregation which are closely related to cardiovascular complications have been reported in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The aim of this study was to assess the mean platelet volume (MPV), an indicator of platelet activation in patients with OSA. The 95 subjects referred for evaluation of OSA underwent overnight polysomnography. Blood samples were taken for MPV determination. According to the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI), subjects were divided into three groups; … Show more

“…25 Furthermore, higher MPV values were shown in patients with severe obstructive sleep apnea leading to cardiovas cular complications compared to a control group in a study with 95 subjects. 26 A significant decrease was found in MPV after continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) treatment for 6 months in a similar group of patients. 27 e found lower hemoglobin levels in the varicocele group compared to controls.…”

“…Platelets with high volume are metabolically and enzymatically more active and secrete more mediators [20,21]. Varol et al [5] reported an increasement in MPV levels of OSA patients and Erden et al [13] claimed a positive correlation between MPV and AHI. But Kurt et al [10] did not found any correlation between MPV and the severity of OSAS.…”

“…Mean platelet volume (MPV) indicates platelet activation but does not notice any spesific disease [4]. It was found to be significantly higher in patients with severe OSAS [5]. MPV may increase in other diseases such as hypercholesterolemia, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, ischemic stroke, myocardial infarction and smoking [6][7][8].…”

“…OSA is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD) (3,16). However, the relationship between OSA and CVD remains unclear (17). Chronic hypoxia can cause catecholamine-related platelet activation and an increase in MPV and PDW values (18,19).…”
