Mean Platelet Volume in Neonatal Sepsis: Meta-Analysis of Observational Studies

Abstract: Introduction: Early onset neonatal sepsis (EONS), particularly in preterm sepsis, is a potentially fatal issue. Evaluation of mean platelet volume (MPV) as an EONS predictor was the goal. Methods: Four databases were used to conduct a systematic evaluation of cohort and case–control studies. Up till the end of October 2022, 137 articles were found utilizing the search method. Following the review, 12 studies were included. Leukocytes, MPV, platelets, gender, birth weight, gestational age, mortality, and C-reac… Show more

“…Although the exact underlying mechanism remains unclear, it is speculated that MPV alterations may reflect the severity and progression of sepsis in neonates. 15,29 Our study highlights the significance of gestational age, CRP, and MPV as predictors for the diagnosis interval of neonatal sepsis. Understanding the relationship between these factors and ADI can facilitate early identification and prompt intervention, ultimately leading to improved patient outcomes.…”

“…14 In contrast, MPV was a diagnostic rather than a prognostic marker in neonatal sepsis. 15 Therefore, the hematology profiles still have a non-negligible role in the diagnosis of neonatal sepsis. Combinations of biomarkers are more valuable than used alone despite their limitations.…”

“…Studies conducted in patients with ulcerative colitis, appendicitis, and newborns with acute respiratory disorders have revealed a relationship between MPV and the severity of the clinical condition. However, there is no conclusion as to whether the variability in the indicator is only a useful additional diagnostic marker or just one of the parameters affected by the developing inflammatory state [ 44 , 45 , 46 , 47 ]. It is worth emphasizing that a higher MPV is associated with greater platelet activity [ 48 , 49 , 50 ].…”

“…Platelets also have a toll-like receptor (TLR), a receptor that may recognize different pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMP). Interaction between TLR and its ligand may directly cause platelet activation [19], [20].…”
