Mean Platelet Volume in Heterozygous Beta Thalassaemia

Abstract: Background/Aim: It is not known why cerebrovascular and cardiovascular ischaemic events are less frequently observed in heterozygous beta thalassaemia (HBT) patients than in the general population. However, we previously reported that serum levels of some platelet function markers, i.e. soluble CD40 ligand and soluble P-selectin, are lower in patients with HBT than in controls. A high mean platelet volume (MPV) is an indicator of in vivo platelet activation and may indicate a tendency to thrombosis. We investi… Show more

“…Thus, MPV denotes the status of thrombopoiesis in the bone marrow, and higher MPV values are associated with increased bone marrow activity [27]. Mean platelet value was also increased in patients with heterozygous beta thalassemia, who had mild ineffective hematopoiesis and hemolysis [28]. Similar to the previous studies, MPV was increased in patients with the diagnosis of ET compared to the patients with reactive thrombocytosis [11] and healthy individuals [10,11].…”

“…Elevated MPV is another indicator of platelet activation, leading to thrombosis [25,26]. Çıkrıkçıoğlu et al [27] found higher MPV values in β Thalassemia intermedia. However, we have not detected any correlation between D-dimer and homocysteine levels.…”

“…In another study, Labib et al [11] found no significant difference as regard platelet counts but a significant higher MPV was found in BTC subjects compared with controls. On the other hand, Cikrikcioglu et al [12] found in the study that, the MPV levels were unexpectedly higher in patients in the BTC group than in the control group. In our study, the children with group 1 lower mean levels of MPV than those with group 2, however there were no statistical differences in MPV (p>0.05), moreover, there were inverse correlations between thrombocyte counts and MPV levels (r=0.18, p<0.05).…”

“…[7][8][9] Several studies reported an inverse relationship between mean platelet volume (MPV) and platelet counts in patients with BTC. [10][11][12] This may be related to morphological features of platelets. In the literature, there are also some informations about platelet indices in BTC.…”
