Mean Platelet Volume and Vitamin D Level

Abstract: BackgroundVitamin D deficiency and a high mean platelet volume (MPV) are related to cardiovascular disease. We investigated whether vitamin D deficiency is associated with high MPV.MethodsThis study included 434 patients without chronic disease who were not taking vitamin D or calcium supplements. Vitamin D was measured by chemiluminescent microparticle immunoassay on the Architect-I2000 system (Abbott Diagnostics, USA), and MPV was measured on the Cell-Dyn Ruby analyzer (Abbott Diagnostics). Patients were div… Show more

“…However, the VD levels had no relationship with systolic and diastolic BP and HR. In our country, the VD levels are frequently lower than in many other countries [13,14]; therefore, subjects in both the PCOS and control groups had in general low VD levels. Although the BP in the PCOS group was higher than in the control group, it was classified as being at a high-normal level.…”

“…A VD deficiency leads to hypertension through many mechanisms, including an activated renin-angiotensin system, impaired glycemic control and hyperinsulinemia, and elevated inflammatory cytokines [14]. Previous studies conducted on PCOS subjects have reported the correlation between the decreased VD levels and both IR and increased LH [16].…”

“…We found only one study which was conducted on adults that investigated the relationship vitamin D and MPV values. In that study, they found that low levels of vitamin D (β=-0.109, p=0.019) were independently associated with increased MPV (17). Finally, the authors suggested a strong association between a low vitamin D level and a high MPV, and stated that vitamin D deficiency may be associated with increased MPV.…”

“…In a transgenic mouse model, the selective elimination of vit D receptors from endothelial cells provides evidence of the importance of vit D in regulating endothelium-dependent vasoreactivity, regulating arterial blood pressure, and alteration of the arterial ECM (25). Furthermore, low levels of vit D have been linked to inflammation, increases in oxidative stress, profibrotic vascular effects, increased vascular stiffness, and decreased vasoreactivity (4,7,17,19). However, modest supplementation of vit D in healthy neonates has also been correlated with negative impacts vascular remodeling.…”
