In animals with functional division of blood systemic and pulmonary pressures, such as mammals, birds, crocodilians and a few non-crocodilian reptiles, the vessel walls of systemic and pulmonary arteries are exquisitely adapted to endure different pressures during the cardiac cycle, systemic arteries being stronger and stiffer than pulmonary arteries. However, the typical non-crocodilian reptile heart possesses an undivided ventricle that provides similar systolic blood pressure to both circuits. This raises the question whether in these species the systemic and pulmonary mechanical vascular properties are similar. Snakes also display large organ plasticity and increased cardiac output in response to digestion, and we speculate how the vascular circuit would respond to this further stress. We addressed these questions by testing the mechanical vascular properties of the dorsal aorta and the right pulmonary artery of fasted and fed yellow anacondas, , a snake without functional ventricular separation that also exhibits large metabolic and cardiovascular responses to digestion. Similar to previous studies, the dorsal aorta was thicker, stronger, stiffer and more elastic than the pulmonary artery. However, unlike any other species studied so far, the vascular distensibility (i.e. the relative volume change given a pressure change) was similar for the two circuits. Most striking, the pulmonary artery elasticity (i.e. its capacity to resume its original form after being stretched) and distensibility increased during digestion, which suggests that this circuit is remodeled to accommodate the larger stroke volume and enhance the Windkessel effect, thus providing a more constant blood perfusion during digestion.

RESUMO:Entre as diversas adaptações que os seres vivos apresentam em resposta às variáveis do ambiente, estão as mudanças adaptativas morfológicas e funcionais a curto e longo prazo que acontecem no sistema digestório em resposta ao padrão de alimentação. Em alguns répteis, tais adaptações vêm ao encontro da maximização dos recursos energéticos, os quais correlacionam os hábitos alimentares ao rendimento energético por meio do processo de regulação de órgãos específicos. Considerável número de artigos discute o desempenho do trato gastrointestinal e a influência de outros sistemas no auxílio a esse comportamento do sistema digestório em répteis, especialmente em pítons. Este trabalho teve por objetivo destacar e discutir as ações fisiológicas envolvidas no processo digestório e em outros sistemas em répteis que se alimentam esporadicamente. A atrofia e reconstrução alternadas do trato gastrointestinal em animais de hábitos alimentares infrequentes garantem a esses uma economia de energia em períodos de jejum e uma alta captação dos nutrientes no período digestivo. Essas alterações são acompanhadas por variações funcionais ácido-básicas, respiratórias e hemodinâmicas, e consequentemente por grandes mudanças na taxa metabólica, quando os estados de jejum e pós-prandial são comparados. EXTREME PHYSIOLOGY: DIGESTION IN INTERMITTENT-FEEDING REPTILESABSTRACT: Short-and long-term morphological and functional adaptive changes in the digestive system related to the feeding habits are among the many adaptations living beings have in response to environmental variables. In some reptiles, such adaptations aim at maximizing the energy resources, which correlate the feeding habits with the energy performance through the regulation of specific organs. A considerable number of articles address the performance of the digestive tract and the influence of other systems in helping this digestive system behavior in reptiles, especially pythons. This paper has the purpose of highlighting and discussing the physiological actions involved in the digestive process and in other systems in reptiles that feed sporadically. The alternate atrophy and reconstruction of the gastrointestinal system in infrequentfeeding animals allow them to save energy during fasting and a high uptake of nutrients during digestion. These changes are accompanied by acid-base, respiratory and hemodynamic alterations, and therefore, by large changes in the metabolic rate, when comparing fasting and the post-prandial periods. The postprandial increment of metabolism, often referred to as specific dynamic action (SDA), encompasses the summed costs of meal ingestion, digestion, absorption, and assimilation. Different SDA parameters, such as its magnitude, duration, and relative cost, are affected by a diverse set of environmental and physiological determinants, including meal size and body temperature. While the influence of these variables has been thoroughly examined in most ectothermic vertebrate groups, few studies have focused on the determinants and consequences of the SDA response in anuran amphibians. Thus, we examined the effects of meal size and body temperature on the SDA response of a Neotropical frog, Leptodactylus latrans, by measuring the rates of oxygen consumption of frogs while fasting and after being fed meals of different sizes at different temperatures. SDA lasted from 3 to 5 days and increased with meal size for frogs fed meals equivalent to 5-15% of their body mass. SDA cost was not affected by meal size and averaged 14.6% of the caloric content of the meal. Temperature increment was accompanied by proportional increases in metabolic rateand shorter SDA duration. The relative SDA cost averaged 14.8% of the meal caloric content at 20°C and 25°C, but increased to 23.5% at 30°C. Our results indicate that meal size imposes no physiological or energetic constraint to L. latrans feeding.Digestion at temperatures near the thermal preference of the species seems to optimize energetic return, whereas the shortening of SDA duration at higher temperatures may provide significant ecological advantages.
